James Gunn’s Control Of DC Studios Could Disappear If Paramount Buy Warner Bros.

There has been a lot of hand-wringing about the possibility of Paramount Skydance buying Warner Bros. Discovery, and what that would mean for both news and entertainment media. While it would be an unmitigated disaster based on the first few weeks of David Ellison’s regime (poor CBS News!!), one thing we hadn’t considered is the future of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s control over DC Studios. According to Puck, if Paramount does buy WBD, Gunn and Safran will find themselves out of power.

According to the report, Ellison and Paramount co-chair Josh Greenstein are huge fans of Weapons director Zach Cregger, and are keen on letting him make a movie in the DCU. That would likely be the Henchman screenplay he’s talked about before.  Right now, it’s Gunn and Safran who make that kind of decision, but they would lose it if Paramount takes over. Greenstein allegedly met with Cregger in Prague where the latter is shooting his Resident Evil movie.

“According to a knowledgeable source, Paramount has been crushing lately on writer-director Zach Cregger, [and] I’m told Cregger discussed with Greenstein his desire to write and direct a movie set in a particular corner of the DC universe (which character or characters are involved is unclear), and Greenstein said he would be more than happy to make that happen, if possible.”

Of course, this all depends on Paramount buying WBD, and right now it seems they have fallen behind frontrunner Netflix.  Here’s the thing: the balance of power could shift no matter who wins this bidding war. Gunn and Safran’s time shepherding the DCU could be numbered, no matter how things shake out.

For now, the DCU’s slate is set in stone with Supergirl arriving June 26th 2026, followed by Clayface on September 11th, and Man of Tomorrow on July 9th 2027.
