The reviews for Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme from its NYFF world premiere were some of the most glowing of the year. The ecstatic praise for Safdie and star Timothée Chalamet was so strong it’s instantly placed the ping pong dramedy near the front of the pack of Best Picture contenders. And now A24 has decided to unveil the first full trailer to show what all of the fuss is about.
Marty Supreme follows the adventures of Marty Mauser, a table tennis champion who isn’t afraid to use his skills to achieve greatness and fame. Safdie directed the film, his first solo effort since 2008’s The Pleasure of Being Robbed, and co-wrote the screenplay with Ronald Bronstein.
The film also features a rare acting role for Gwyneth Paltrow as a love interest. Also in the cast are Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler the Creator, Abel Ferrara, Penn Jillette, Sandra Bernhard, and Fran Drescher. Philippe Petit also makes an appearance, and if you don’t know who he is, you should watch Man on Wire immediately.
One look at the footage and you can see the velocity and high-energy tension that drove the Safdie Brothers’ Uncut Gems and many of their creative ventures.
SYNOPSIS: Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness.
Marty Supreme will hit theaters on Christmas Day.
