Well, this is long overdue. There can’t be as many live-action Flintstones movies as there already have been, and yet somehow not have one for The Jetsons. Variety reports Jim Carrey is in talks to star in a movie based on the futuristic Hanna-Barbera cartoon, with Colin Trevorrow to direct.
Originally launched in prime time in 1962, The Jetsons was basically the Space Age counterpart to The Flintstones, which took place in the Stone Age. The series centered on George and Jane Jetson, who lived in the spacey Orbit City with their two kids Judy and Elroy, plus their dog Astro and loyal robot maid Rosey. The world was filled with flying cars, transport tubes, food delivered automatically by conveyor belt. George spent his days slaving away at a job that only required him to press a button, although it was still enough to annoy his angry boss Mr. Spacely.
1990’s The Jetsons: The Movie was the last Jetsons movie, and it earned $20M at the box office. It famously had pop star Tiffany as the voice of Judy.
Trevorrow recently shepherded the latest Jurassic World trilogy, directing two of the movies and writing a third. He will co-write the Jetsons screenplay with Joe Epstein if all deals come through.
Carrey had largely pulled himself away from acting, but returned to play Dr. Robotnik in all three Sonic the Hedgehog movies.
There have been multiple attempts at a big-screen Jetsons movie, including versions by Adam Shankman and Robert Rodriguez. An animated movie in 2017 would’ve had Sausage Party director Conrad Vernon.
