From the very beginning, Ryan Coogler’s vampire flick Sinners was eyed as a potential franchise. Well, $340M worldwide, most of that domestic, will cause that potential to be realized very quickly. According to Production Weekly, Sinners 2 is “In Development”, with Coogler expected back as director.
Some dispute whether Sinners was intended by Coogler to be the launch of a franchise, but when you negotiate to have ownership of the rights for 25 years, what else are you aiming to do with it?
Anyway, Coogler has a lot going on so a Sinners sequel is probably a long way off. For instance, he has his X-Files reboot to get off the ground first. And then there’s probably going to be Black Panther 3 sometime after that. He will also be involved in Creed IV even if he’s not directing it.
Sinners didn’t exactly set itself up for sequels, though. Most of the main characters died at the teeth of the bloodsuckers. However, a mid-credits scene set in 1992 did establish that at least a few did survive and are still out there living the nightlife. A Chicago-set sequel in the ’90s sounds like a lot of fun, doesn’t it? Sign me up.
