‘Somewhere Out There’: Alexander Payne’s First Non-English Film To Star Renate Reinsve

While there was some hope Alexander Payne would follow up The Holdovers with his anticipated Election sequel, Tracy Flick Can’t Win, that film is still in the distance. Payne will instead focus on his first non-English language movie, titled Somewhere Out There, and it’s just lined up a great actress.

According to ScreenDaily, The Worst Person in the World and A Different Man breakout Renate Reinsve will take a supporting role in Payne’s Somewhere Out There. The Danish-language film is aiming to shoot in Denmark in early 2026. Plot details remain scarce, but it will have a script by Norwegian novelist and screenwriter Erlend Loe, based on an original idea by Swedish filmmaker Åke Sandgren.

Reinsve is at Cannes for Joachim Trier’s latest, Sentimental Value. She had a very busy 2024 with four films: A Different Man, Handling the Dead, Another End, and Armand for which we interviewed her.

Payne also has a few other options on the table, including a 19th-century Western that would reunite him with Sideways and The Holdovers star Paul Giamatti. He also had planned a remake for Netflix of Babette’s Feast set in Minnesota, but it’s unclear the status since it was announced in 2019.
