‘Deeper’: Ana de Armas Reportedly Joining Tom Cruise In Doug Liman’s Underwater Thriller

Already one of the hottest projects making its way through Hollywood, Tom Cruise and Doug Liman’s underwater thriller Deeper might be getting hotter. Deadline reports that Ana de Armas is not only joining Cruise, but they’re already doing the diving training for it together.

The report calls Deeper an “undersea supernatural film” that Liman will direct from a screenplay by Max Landis that has been making the rounds for a decade. Cruise’s pal and Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie is said to be working on the script now, too.

Deeper “follows an astronaut who encounters a terrifying force while on a deep dive into a never-before-explored trench.” It’s an expensive movie with a budget in the $200M range, which proved to be too rich for WB’s blood. Studios should know that Cruise doesn’t make inexpensive movies anymore, so wherever this lands, it will be paid for handsomely.

The dangerous (and expensive) underwater stuntwork should be right up Cruise’s alley. He’s already going to attempt to conquer space with an untitled movie with Liman, McQuarrie, and aid from NASA and SpaceX, so why not the vastness of the ocean floor, too?

Adding de Armas into the mix would be quite a coup. The actress is on fire right now and stands to be an even bigger deal when John Wick spinoff Ballerina hits theaters in a couple of weeks.
