Is there already trouble with the DCU horror film, Clayface? Arguably, the biggest draw to that movie about the malleable Bat-villain was writer Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep), whose horror track record is top-notch. Well, he’s out according to Jeff Sneider, with a new writer being brought in for a complete rewrite.
So what happened? Flanagan reportedly turned in a first draft but it was still in very early form. With Flanagan needing to turn his attention to his upcoming Carrie series for Prime Video, the decision was made to hire a new screenwriter to do a complete overhaul. That could mean Flanagan isn’t credited at all. The film has James Watkins (Speak No Evil) attached to direct. We still don’t know the name of the new writer.
It’s too early to get concerned, but I’ve been asking myself who exactly asked for a Clayface movie, anyway? It’s such an odd project to develop given the uncertainty of the DCU. Superman isn’t a guaranteed lock to succeed, and the same goes for Supergirl which releases a few months later.
This news comes just a couple of days after James Gunn’s DCU hit another setback when Luca Guadagnino’s Sgt. Rock movie was canceled. It just goes to show that nothing is concrete when it comes to DC Studios right now, it’s a franchise that is still finding its way.
