Well, I have to say I’m not too surprised by this. The Wrap confirms that Luca Guadagnino’s DC Studios film, Sgt. Rock, has been scrapped. The filmmaker has dropped out of the WWII-set film, all but cementing its demise. This comes after the star originally attached to it, Daniel Craig, made his exit a few weeks ago.
Colin Farrell, who already has a major DC role as The Penguin, was eyed to replace Craig. Mike Faist, who worked with Guadagnino on Challengers, was considering a supporting role. Justin Kuritzkes’ screenplay doesn’t seem to be the problem, nor was the budget which was reportedly around $70M.
Instead, it’s scheduling issues that have found Sgt. Rock taken off active duty. Guadagnino was planning to shoot this summer, with trusted DP Sayombhu Mukdeeprom aboard and a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. However, the director also has an American Psycho remake and with Austin Butler reportedly set to play Patrick Bateman, that may have been made a priority.
Hollywood has been attempting to make a Sgt. Rock movie happen for decades. It’s doubtful this will be the last time someone takes a crack at it, and maybe Guadagnino will come back when his schedule clears up.
