Wes Anderson has been busy over the last few years, moving at a faster clip than ever in his career. In 2023 he released Asteroid City, as well as the short film The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, for which he won his first Academy Award. Next month, he returns to features with the family business caper, The Phoenician Scheme, starring Benicio Del Toro as one of the richest men in Europe and someone who everyone wants to get a piece of.
Del Toro plays Zsa Zsa Korda, who many think is dead but those reports have been greatly exaggerated based on the opening moments of this trailer. Mia Threapleton stars as Korda’s estranged daughter, Sister Liesel, also a nun, the sole inheritor of his estate and that has pissed off a lot of people.
Michael Cera also stars in a key role, joined by a huge supporting cast of Anderson regulars: Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Willem Dafoe, Bill Murray, Richard Ayoade, Mathieu Amalric, Antonia Desplat, Imke Büchel, Jaime Ferkic, Rupert Friend, Aysha Samuel, Sabine Hollweck, Tonio Arango, Imad Mardnli, Hope Davis, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
SYNOPSIS: A dark tale of espionage following a strained father-daughter relationship within a family business. Twists revolve around betrayal and morally gray choices.
Directed by Anderson and co-written with Roman Coppola, The Phoenician Scheme hits theaters on May 30th from Focus Features.
