Johnny Depp has been attempting a Hollywood comeback for some time now, but if that’s going to happen, what he needs is a successful box office film. Last October, we learned about his next best shot, Day Drinker, a new thriller directed by Marc Webb, the creator of The Amazing Spider-Man. And now, with filming officially underway, we have our first look at Depp in his role, courtesy of Lionsgate.
Day Drinker is a reunion between Depp and his Blow and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides co-star Penelope Cruz. They’re joined by Madelyn Cline, Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle.
Here’s the synopsis: In DAY DRINKER, a private-yacht bartender (Madelyn Cline) encounters a mysterious, onboard guest (Johnny Depp). They soon find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Penélope Cruz) and connected in ways no one saw coming.
The script is by Fast X and The Tomorrow War writer Zach Dean. Dean is also a producer with Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, the duo best known for their successful John Wick movies that Lionsgate loves so much.
Depp isn’t the only one who could use a hit. Webb is looking to rebound from Disney’s Snow White flop, and a hit here would go a long way.
