Elizabeth Olsen has a new movie in theaters, the psychological sci-fi thriller The Assessment, alongside Himesh Patel and Alicia Vikander. It’s a very different kind of role for Olsen than she had in the MCU, but in my review I noted similarities with her character Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch, in that both are people who are barely holding it together while putting on a brave face. Sadly, Wanda’s story appeared to have come to an end with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but that hasn’t stopped speculation that she’ll return for the next Avengers movies.
Olsen is dumping cold water on an MCU comeback, however. Speaking with THR, she says an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars isn’t in the cards…
“I didn’t realize this until about six years ago, but because Marvel and its influence takes up so much physical time and space in the world, it’s really important for me to make choices outside of Marvel that reflect my own taste,” Olsen said. “Your taste does create the artist that you are, and that wasn’t something I was thinking about when I first started working. I was just grateful to be a working actor. I wanted to stretch myself into different roles, and I wasn’t really thinking about my taste. So the opportunity to return to films like this is a reflection of the people I want to work with and my own personal taste in ways, even if I’m not the filmmaker.”
When asked if she’d be staying in London to shoot Marvel’s next Avengers sequels, Olsen replied “No. I’m back [in the States]. I just finished [Panic Carefully]. I’m moving on to filming a pilot for FX [called Seven Sisters].”
All of that said, would anyone be surprised she Scarlet Witch showed up? Me, neither. If not then, certainly in the Vision Quest series starring Paul Bettany. How do you tell Vision’s story without her?
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on May 1st 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7th 2027.
