With eight years invested at Marvel, Benedict Cumberbatch is as excited as ever to play Doctor Strange. While some MCU originals have already left and found their way back, Cumberbatch is looking forward to his next chance to play the Sorcerer Supreme, which will likely be in the next two Avengers movies. While it’s not been confirmed, rumors are that a third Doctor Strange movie is in the works, as well.
Appearing at the Red Sea Film Festival (via Variety) as a producer on We Live in Time, Cumberbatch opened up about his time with Marvel and teased more Doctor Strange stories to come.
Cumberbatch described Strange as a “complex man motivated by a need to control everything at any cost.” “I am interested in seeing where these costs take him,” he said. “There is a lot more to play and it’s very exciting.”
What keeps Cumberbatch coming back is his belief that when Marvel is in top form, its cultural influence is significant.
“When they are really good, they capture the zeitgeist, speak to us and our culture,” he said. “They are so much fun to do.”
The last time we saw Strange it was at the conclusion of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He had undergone some changes, like developing a third eye, following his dreamwalk into a corpse and extensive use of the evil Darkhold. He then set out into the Dark Dimension to repair an incursion alongside Clea, played by Charlize Theron in a cameo role.
