‘How To Train Your Dragon’ Teaser: Hiccup And Toothless Are Back And In Live-Action

The Shrek movies might’ve made more money, but let’s be real that Dreamworks’ best animated franchise is How to Train Your Dragon. Both financially successful and critically acclaimed, the films came to a bittersweet end with 2019’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. But if you thought that was the end of Hiccup and Toothless, think again, because now they’re back and in live-action.

Dreamworks has revealed the first teaser for How to Train Your Dragon, a live-action reboot from franchise creator Dean DeBlois who acts as writer and director. Based on this footage, he’s sticking pretty close to the formula and using many of the same shots, which should make fans extremely happy.

Starring in the film are Mason Thames as Hiccup, Nico Parker as Astrid, and Gerard Butler who now gets to fully embody his voice role of Stoick the Vast. Also in the cast are Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray McArthur.

How to Train Your Dragon opens in theaters on June 13th 2025.

SYNOPSIS: On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society. With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (BAFTA nominee Nico Parker; Dumbo, The Last of Us) and the village’s quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost; Snow White and the Huntsman, Shaun of the Dead) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding. As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader.
