Fans have been waiting a long time for Parasite director Bong Joon-ho’s sci-fi film Mickey 17 to arrive. Originally scheduled for earlier this year, the Robert Pattinson-led film was eventually kicked to January 31st 2025. And now, as that date inches closer, the first full trailer has finally arrived.
Pattinson stars in the adaptation of Edward Ashton’s novel, playing a “disposal” employee who dies repeatedly only to be cloned with his memories mostly intact so as to continue his dangerous mission colonizing an ice planet.
Sounds a bit like Edge of Tomorrow and other time loop sci-fi films, right? Reviews of the footage shown at CinemaCon were mixed, so it’s unclear if this will be another acclaimed Joon-ho film or something that’s a bit of a lark. I would add that Joon-ho is good at making weighty, awards-worthy material that is also pretty silly. I would point to Okja as one example and Mickey 17 could be another.
SYNOPSIS: A disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey7. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal… and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.
Pattinson is joined in the Mickey 17 cast by Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Holliday Grainger.
