Matt Reeves Confirms ‘The Batman’ Was Start Of A Trilogy

With The Penguin hitting Max next week, people have begun talking about The Batman and the upcoming sequel, The Batman Part II. We know the spinoff series led by Colin Farrell will act as a bridge between the two films, exploring the Gotham City criminal underworld as Ozwald Cobblepot makes his bid for power. But what else do we actually know about the Matt Reeves’ sequel, other than it’ll arrive in 2026?

Well, we know now that The Batman Part II will be the middle chapter of a trilogy. Reeves confirmed the news to Collider that three movies starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne has been the plan all along…

“Yes, that is still the plan,” Reeves told Collider. “I mean, it’s sticking very closely to the path we envisioned.”

Following the critical and box office success of The Batman, the idea was to launch a series of spinoff shows, one following the Gotham PD, the other set in Arkham Asylum, as a way of expanding what we know of the world Reeves has created. But those shows were axed, leaving only The Penguin to do the same job of three…

“Things kind of shifted. So, when we came up with the idea to do The Penguin, that was something where I had always intended to continue Penguin’s story, and wanted to tell this story of his beginning of rise to power,” Reeves said. “Because we know that he’s introduced in The Batman as a kind of mid-level, sort of overlooked, mocked figure, who’s not yet in anyone’s eyes the kingpin we come to know him as in the lore.”

He continued, “And so, that was deliberate because I wanted— whereas it wasn’t Batman’s origin story, I wanted the origin stories of these other characters, of the Rogues Gallery and that story was originally going to be the entrée into the next movie.”

Reeves hopes to begin shooting next year as they finish up the script. He also says that Farrell will return for the sequel as Penguin, whose position in Gotham’s criminal hierarchy should be very different than it was before.

The Batman Part II opens October 2nd 2026.
