James Cameron has 3 of the top 5 highest-grossing movies ever. And 2 of those are Avatar movies that combined for $5.2B. Incredible. At this rate, Cameron could have ALL of the top 5 money-earners by the time he’s done with the world of Pandora. And last night at D23, Cameron revealed the next one would have a new title, Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Cameron appeared on stage alongside stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, who play Jake Sully and Neytiri, respectively. The sequel was shot back-to-back alongside 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water.
“You’ll see a lot more Pandora that you never saw before,” Cameron said (via Variety). “It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before,” Cameron said during the presentation. “We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”
“There are new characters, one especially I think you’re gonna love, or love to hate,” Cameron said.
Also in the cast are Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, , Jack Champion, CCH Pounder, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Bailey Bass, and David Thewlis who plays a Na’vi who will also appear in the next two sequels. Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh plays a human scientist, while Oona Chaplin is Varang, leader of the fearsome “Ash People” who are different than the other Na’vi. The fire tribe are covered in volcanic soot and dance around a fire pit wearing masks.
Avatar: Fire and Ash opens on December 19th 2025.
