Denis Villeneuve’s coming back to theaters, and fairly soon after Dune: Part Two. But is his next film Dune: Messiah? THR reports that Warner Bros. has dated an untitled film from Villeneuve and Legendary Entertainment for December 18th 2026.
It’s been known for a few months that Villeneuve and Legendary had gotten the ball rolling on Dune 3. The first two movies have been both critically acclaimed and box office successes, combined for over $1.1B worldwide.
But why aren’t they just announcing his next movie as Dune 3? It could be because Villeneuve is also attached to an adaptation of Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear: War: A Scenario, and that could be first on his list. Let’s face it, he might need a break from the spice wars and onto something that explores the real-world impact of nuclear war. The lack of an announcement suggests that Villeneuve still hasn’t decided which project is next.
Meanwhile, Legendary has set the next MonsterVerse movie from director Grant Sputore for March 26th 2027. The I Am Mother director replaced Adam Wingard on the sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New World, the highest-grossing MonsterVerse movie ever. He’s got big shoes to fill, kaiju-sized shoes, you might say. No details on the plot or which cast members will be returning. The actors tend to come-and-go from this franchise, so it’s really anyone’s guess.
