‘Godzilla x Kong’ Sequel Moves Forward With ‘Shang-Chi’ Writer Dave Callaham

With $548M worldwide, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the highest grossing Godzilla movie ever. There was never any doubt that Legendary and Warner Bros. were going to move ahead with another Monsterverse sequel, but today it became official. THR reports that Dave Callaham has been hired to write the screenplay.

Callaham is probably best known for writing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It’s unclear the direction this film will take, but assume that Godzilla and King Kong will clash before eventually teaming up to face a new deadly Titan threat.

The hiring of Callaham makes sense given his past on numerous blockbusters beyond Shang-Chi. He’s also worked on Mortal Kombat, Wonder Woman 1984, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and even 2014’s Godzilla so he has prior experience with the big lizard. Callaham also helped create The Expendables franchise with Sylvester Stallone.

Adam Wingard doesn’t have a deal to return yet, after directing ‘The New Empire’ and 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. He’s expressed interest in doing so and both studios would like it to happen. However, he wants to complete an original film for A24 this fall, titled Onslaught, before he comes back to the realm of kaiju.
