James McAvoy seems like a really cool guy, right? Well, you might not think so after watching the new trailer for Blumhouse’s thriller remake, Speak No Evil. In fact, McAvoy looks like a nightmarish host to an American he meets while on Italian vacation.
The trailer debuted yesterday at CinemaCon during Universal’s presentation. In the footage, we see Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy as Louise and Ben Dalton, who along with their young daughter, befriend the welcoming Scottish couple Paddy (McAvoy) and Ciara (Aisling Franciosi), who have a mute son Ant (Dan Hough). They get along so well that Louis and Ben accept an invitation for a weekend-long getaway.
Paddy seems nice and everything…at first, until a terrible darkness emerges, and only gets worse when Ben and Louise try to leavem. And we know from some of McAvoy’s previous roles, I’m thinking of Split in particular, that he can play really twisted and scary when he wants to.
The film is written and directed by James Watkins, known for Eden Lake and the acclaimed ghost story The Woman in Black. Watkins based the film on the 2022 Danish horror that we reviewed here.
Here’s the synopsis: When an American family is invited to spend the weekend at the idyllic country estate of a charming British family they befriended on vacation, what begins as a dream holiday soon warps into a snarled psychological nightmare.
Speak No Evil opens in theaters on September 12th.
