Five years after Idris Elba made his directorial debut with Yardie, he’s back with his sophomore effort, and this one definitely sounds like more of a mainstream studio effort. Deadline reports Elba will produce, direct, and star in Infernus, an action-thriller that Millennium will be selling at Cannes.
Elba will play a U.N human rights activist investigating a U.S. black site after reports of refugees being detained there. But when the world’s most dangerous criminals break free, it’s up to him to get the refugees out safely while also contending with a criminal mastermind.
Robert Mark Kamen, known for The Karate Kid, Taken, and The Transporter franchises, wrote the screenplay from a story by Tom Boyle.
Shooting is set to begin this October in London. Elba recently starred in Luther: The Fallen Sun, a film sequel to his hit detective series. He has coming up a return as Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, due in 2024.
