It’s not just Liam Neeson whose got the market cornered playing a parent who employs a particular set of skills to protect their kids. Jennifer Lopez gets in on the action with her latest film, The Mother, a Netflix joint that’s set to kick ass on…you guessed it, Mother’s Day weekend.
Lopez, whose been trying to revive the rom-com of late with Marry Me, Shotgun Wedding, and her revitalized relationship with Ben Affleck, stars as a deadly assassin and momma bear who comes out of hiding to protect the daughter she gave up years earlier.
So expect lots of “Come with me if you want to live” type stuff, along with some mother/daughter bonding.
There’s a lot of intriguing talent here on both sides of the camera. Niki Caro, best known for films such as Whale Rider and Mulan, is the director, keeping with her preference for strong female protagonists. The screenplay is co-written by Misha Green, writer of HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Andrea Berloff of Straight Outta Compton, and The Batman co-writer Peter Craig.
And joining Lopez in the cast are Joseph Fiennes, Omari Hardwick, Gael Garcia Bernal, Lucy Paez, and Oscar nominee Paul Raci.
Mother’s Day hits Netflix on May 12, and I’d be surprised if they don’t give it some limited theatrical engagement, too.
