James Gunn Talks ‘Superman: Legacy’, Says It Will “Respect” Previous Movies

James Gunn is currently making the rounds for next week’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which makes for an interesting situation considering Gunn’s other job. As a co-chief of DC Studios, Gunn is also leading Marvel’s chief rival, and one of the many projects he’s developing is Superman: Legacy.

In a profile piece at THR, Gunn talked about the major differences between Guardians and Superman, and basically it boils down to expectations. One is clearly designed to be a comedy, but Superman isn’t going to be that, even if it’s the kind of movie people expect from Gunn…

“It’s easier to take a character nobody knows, like the Guardians, or Peacemaker, and then do whatever you want with them,” said Gunn. “People in every single country in the world know the story of Superman.”

“How can I make it different from the ‘Superman’ movies that have been made so far, but also have it respect all the ‘Superman’ movies that have been made so far?” he continued. “So it just took me some time to try to figure it out.”

Gunn has quite a job on his hands. Getting Superman “right” has been tough for directors to pull off, literally for decades. And it’s all going to start with who lands the coveted Clark Kent role. I’d kill for that news to drop at Comic-Con this summer, but truthfully, it’ll probably be some time after.
