When Amazon acquired MGM Studios and its massive collection of titles and franchises, we knew they weren’t going to let it go to waste. But now a new Deadline report gives a larger view of what to expect, with film and TV projects in the works for RoboCop, Stargate, Legally Blonde, The Thomas Crown Affair, Fame Barbershop, and The Magnificent Seven.
Some of these have already gotten the ball rolling. A Thomas Crown movie had been in the works from MGM and the Russo Brothers’ AGBO label, with Michael B. Jordan starring and a script from the writer of Midway. It’s unclear if Jordan would still be involved with that, as he has already begun teasing an expansion of the Creed franchise after the success of his directorial debut, Creed III.
A new Legally Blonde sequel was also on the way from co-writers Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, with Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Coolidge expected to return. However, it’s unclear where that project stands, and if all will be part it now that it’s moved to Amazon. Amazon is eyeing this one for film and TV, so it could end up as both or either.
The same film/tv plans are being considered for Stargate, based on the Roland Emmerich/Dean Devlin 1994 sci-fi classic that spawned multiple series spinoffs. Robocop, which last had Neill Blomkamp (Chappie) attached to a reboot before he left and Little Monsters director Abe Forsythe stepped in. That version didn’t go anywhere, either.
Fame, Barbershop, and The Magnificent Seven are all being looked at as potential TV shows. The first two make sense, as those movies have already been given the series treatment. But The Magnificent Seven was last a hit film starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt. You’d think Amazon would want to piggyback off of that if they could.
