‘The Blackening’ Trailer: Tim Story’s Horror-Comedy Has Black Characters Trying To Survive A Genre Trope

You know the joke; Black people in horror movies are always the ones to die first. But what happens when all of the characters are Black? Tim Story’s new horror-comedy, The Blackening, is coming to answer that hot-button question this Juneteenth weekend.

Starring Antoinette Robertson, Dewayne Perkins, Sinqua Walls, Grace Byers, X Mayo, Melvin Gregg, Jermaine Fowler, Yvonne Orji, and Jay Pharoah, the film finds a group of Black friends gathered on Juneteenth weekend, and find themselves trapped in a remote cabin in the woods with a twisted killer.

As seen in the trailer, the film will explore Black culture and make social commentary using horror tropes. The script is by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip) and Dewayne Perkins (The Amber Ruffin Show).

The Blackening opens in theaters on June 16th.
