‘Captain America 4’ Lands ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’ Director Julius Onah

Following on the events of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson is feeling pretty comfortable taking over as Captain America. Well, it’s about time.  A new Cap means a new movie, and now we know Captain America 4 will be directed by Julius Onah, best known for Luce and The Cloverfield Paradox.

THR confirms the news of Onah directing Anthony Mackie in Captain America 4, making this the biggest film yet for the Nigerian-American filmmaker. This will also be Mackie’s first solo Marvel film since Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers passed the shield over to his pal, Sam Wilson. Sam had to fight through a lot of misgivings to reach this point, but now he’s ready to represent the red, white, and blue.

Sam being an African-American man, this version of Captain America will reflect his complicated feelings towards the country. A lot of the work in defining that was done by writers Marcus Spellman and Dalan Musson on Falcon and the Winter Soldier. They will be continuing that development on the movie, as well.

Will other characters from the series make appearances? I think we can probably expect Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier to show up, as they have become good friends with clear connections to Steve Rogers. And while he denies it, the door is clearly open for Chris Evans if he wants to make a cameo. Rogers is an old man who may or may not be dead, but surely that can’t stay the status quo forever, right?

Onah really found his footing as a filmmaker with Luce, a domestic thriller led by Kelvin Harrison, Naomi Watts, and Tim Roth. The film earned three Indie Spirit nominations among other accolades. Before that, Onah’s biggest movie was The Cloverfield Paradox which was a disappointing sci-fi entry in the franchise. However, that film had Onah working with Daniel Bruhl, who is a good bet to return as Baron Zemo and trouble the new Cap.

Here’s hoping we learn more about Captain America 4 when Marvel has their San Diego Comic-Con panel in a couple of weeks.
