‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ Lands ‘Shang-Chi’ Director Destin Daniel Cretton

Marvel fast-forwarded us all the way to the end of Phase 6 during their presentation over the weekend. The announcement of the two-part saga Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars got the speculation going that the Russo Brothers would return to direct them. But as the recent announcement of more Gray Man sequels makes clear, they’re going to be very busy for a long time. So the job of directing at least one of those new Avengers films has fallen to someone else under the Marvel umbrella.

THR confirms Shant-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton will be at the helm for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, due to open on May 2nd 2025. The second part, Secret Wars, opens on November 7th 2025. Yes, both halves are coming in the same year, suggesting the two films will be shot back-to-back or very close to it.

This move also throws into doubt Cretton’s involvement with Shang-Chi 2. Then again, that sequel hasn’t been confirmed by Marvel so it’s possible it may not arrive until Phase 7 or beyond.

No details on the plot of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty except that it’ll feature Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror, a multiversal baddie who has many different versions of himself out there. Could we possibly see Immortus, Rama-Tut, or, maybe even Iron Lad?
