The most meta Marvel series ever is right around the corner. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has made the jump from DC, where he played the villain Black Manta in Aquaman, to Marvel Studios, where he’ll lead its upcoming Wonder Man series. He stars as the MCU version of Simon Williams, a key member of the Avengers team.
For those who don’t know, Simon Williams aka Wonder Man is an Avenger who is also a famous Hollywood actor, so he’s like a celebrity in two different ways. The show follows Simon as he agonizes over an audition for a Wonder Man movie being made by a celebrated director, played by Superman actor Zlatko Burić. It’s a role Simon believes he was born to play. Interestingly, the footage ends with Simon possibly telling a whopper of a lie just to try out for the role. We also see the first tease of what his superpowers will be.
Also in the cast are Ben Kingsley, Demetrius Grosse, Ed Harris, and Arian Moayed. Kingsley is reprising his role as washed-up actor Trevor Slattery. Episodes have been directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Tiffany Johnson, James Ponsoldt, and Stella Meghie.
Wonder Man will run for eight episodes on Disney+.
