The acclaimed 208 documentary The Rescue was a real pulse-pounder, capturing the nerve-racking tension of the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue. Basically, Ron Howard has very big shoes to fill, but in this first trailer for his film Thirteen Lives, it looks as if keeping us on the edge of our seats won’t be a problem at all.
Starring Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, and Joel Edgerton as three of the international crew of divers sent in to rescue 12 soccer players and their coach trapped 1,000 meters below ground during a monsoon.
‘It was a huge technical challenge,’ says Howard. ‘There was so much cinema involved in making this a visceral experience – it was this ongoing process of creating the [caves] and the rescue effort, and then attaching the humanity to it. There are many brands of heroism that are demonstrated throughout the movie.’
The international cast also includes Weir Sukollawat (Malila), Thiraphat Sajakul (The Serpent), Sahajak Boonthanakit (The Serpent), Vithaya Pansringarm (The Prey), Teeradon “James” Supapunpinyo (Bad Genius), Nophand Boonyai (Only God Forgives), Tom Bateman (Death on the Nile), Paul Gleeson (The Thin Red Line), and Lewis Fitz-Gerald (Pitch Black).
Thirteen Lives hits theaters on July 29th, followed by Prime Video on August 5th.
