The odds are once again in Lionsgate’s favor. The studio made it clear quite some time ago they weren’t ready to give up on The Hunger Games, even after the blockbuster franchise, which made Jennifer Lawrence a superstar, concluded in 2015. And so here we are with the icy first teaser reveal of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a prequel centered on a young Coriolanus Snow.
Revealed last night during the MTV Movie and TV Awards, the teaser has no actual footage from the movie. However, it does show a snake and a songbird shedding their frozen armors to reveal golden skin underneath.
“You’re invited to return to the Games. In 2023, the world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake”, reads the accompanying text.
The story will center on young Coriolanus Snow, future villainous President of Panem, as he’s tasked with mentoring Lucy Gray Baird, a spirited tribute from the poor District 12 for the 10th annual Hunger Games. Tom Blyth was cast to play Coriolanus, while West Side Story breakout Rachel Zegler was recently cast as Baird.
Franchise veteran director Francis Lawrence will direct The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes which opens on November 17th 2023.
