‘Gran Turismo’ Film Racing To The Screen From ‘District 9’ Director Neill Blomkmap

With the successes of two Sonic the Hedgehog movies and Uncharted, video game movies are no longer the laughingstock they used to be. And Sony, which released the latter to $400M worldwide, has found the next Sony Playstation game it wants to bring to the screen: Gran Turismo.

Deadline reports Sony and Playstation Pictures are teaming up to bring the bestselling racing simulator game to the screen, and they’ve tapped Neil Blomkamp to direct. Gran Turismo is one of the defining Playstation franchises, selling millions of copies worldwide. The seventh and most recent game was released in March.

Blomkamp was a red-hot filmmaker for a time, thanks to his debut feature, the Oscar-nominated District 9. And while he’s always remained an incredible visual director, his films since have seen diminishing returns: Elysium, Chappie, and last year’s horror Demonic.

A film like Gran Turismo could be the shot in the arm Blomkamp needs.

Add this to the growing list of Playstation adaptations on the way, including HBO’s The Last of Us series, a Twisted Metal show with Anthony Mackie, a Ghosts of Tsushima film, and a Metal Gear movie starring Oscar Isaac.
