I think after District 9 we all expected to see a lot more from Sharlto Copley. That never really panned out. Sure, we’ve seen him in plenty of roles, usually supporting, but he didn’t become the leading man it seemed that he would. He’s become quite good at playing weirdos and nutballs, which bodes well for his starring role in Ted K, a biopic that goes inside the mind of the infamous Unabomber.
The film comes from the mind of acclaimed director and cinematographer Tony Stone (Out of Our Minds), who also co-wrote the script. Copley looks like he has fully embraced the role of Ted Kaczynski, necessary as this film is different than others that focus on the manhunt to capture him. This one is, instead, a look at the man himself, and the beliefs that drove him on a bombing campaign that lasted nearly two decades.
Here’s the synopsis: Ted K lives a life of almost complete seclusion in a simple wooden cabin in the mountains of Montana. But then this former university professor, who despises modern society and its faith in technology, becomes radicalized. What begins with local acts of sabotage, ends with deadly bomb attacks. To the outside world, Ted K becomes known as the Unabomber.
Ted K will open in theaters and digital on February 18th.
