New ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Sequel Heads To Netflix, No Theatrical Release

When theatre owners worry about the future of theatrical distribution, it’s more than just concern over the box office. It’s also because of news like this, as another potentially major film has made the leap to streaming, this time it’s Legendary’s upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

THR reports Legendary has sold the rights to distribute the Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel from producer Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) and director David Blue Garcia. The film will do pretty much the same as the recent Halloween sequels and be direct continuations of the original film with no regard for anything that came after.

The return of Leatherface was penned by Chris Thomas Devlin, and stars Elsie Fisher, Sarah Yarkin, Jacob Latimore, and Moe Dunford. No word on a release date, but when Texas Chainsaw does arrive it will be exclusive to Netflix with no theatrical component.

Horror has been one of the most consistent genres during the pandemic, largely due to their low cost. So it’s a little surprising that Legendary would unload a potentially lucrative project that fans instantly recognize. Should we take this as a sign the movie isn’t any good?
