You may have noticed #RestoretheSnyderverse trending on Twitter over the weekend, as Zack Snyder’s fans ready for the upcoming release of his Justice League cut. It started soon after WB Films chief Walter Hamada said there were no plans for Snyder’s vision of the DCEU. But is that truly the case? To hear it from Kevin Smith, there may be more to come. However, Snyder himself has another feeling on the matter.
Speaking with Comic Book Debate, Snyder says there is no future for the Snyderverse…for now. But as with all things when it comes to the movie industry, that could change in a heartbeat…
“Look, I never thought I’d be here doing this. I didn’t think I’d be finishing ‘Justice League. The truth is, and it’s been widely reported, and I have no issue, this is an old movie. This is a years-old movie I’m working on. The DC universe has gone and branched off and done its own thing and that’s fine.”
Snyder added, “As far as what I did and as far as what my vision for what I wanted to do with these characters and the journey I wanted them to go on, it’s well known that I planned on more movies — five movies or something — but I’m busy. I’ve got a lot going on. Is it cool that the fans have so much faith in the trajectory? Yes, it’s amazing, and I couldn’t be happier and I’m excited for them to see ‘Justice League’ so they can really drink the entire elixir of ‘Justice League.’ But would I continue? I have no plan to. But like I said, I didn’t think I’d be here, so who knows?”
It would be very difficult to integrate Snyder’s storylines into the current DCEU framework. Both Wonder Woman films sorta do their own thing separate from what Snyder introduced in Batman v Superman, and the same goes for Aquaman. Furthermore, The Flash will basically reset things to such an extent that Michael Keaton’s Batman will stick around while Ben Affleck’s vanishes, and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is rewriting the book on that team.
That said, I’m not convinced Snyder is done with DC superheroes. While he may not be running things in the Feige-like way he was before, he’s still a fan-favorite filmmaker with a loyal base of supporters. He has some value as just a director and storyteller if given a specific lane to stay in.
