Review: ‘The Drama’

Zendaya And Robert Pattinson Shine In Shallow, Edgy Rom-Com That's Sure To Be Polarizing

Robert Pattinson and Zendaya in THE DRAMA

Never ask a question that you’re not prepared to receive the answer. In particular in matters of love, never inquire of your significant other something that you may not want to hear. It’s like asking, “How many sexual partners have you been with?” There is no good answer, so just don’t even ask it. Kristofer Borgli’s The Drama is driven by this very issue, and a deep, dark secret that drives a wedge between a soon-to-be-wedded couple played by Robert Pattinson and Zendaya. It’s a deeply uncomfortable film, good for some nervous laughter, and is a movie that is sure to spark intense conversations. Some of it will be for good, but some will also be for the razor-thin portrayals and the dismissive approach to a tragic issue that has already sparked its share of controversy.

Ostensibly a rom-com, The Drama opens with a meet-cute seen from Charlie’s (Pattinson) perspective. The British museum curator is unfathomably shy and, as we see throughout, woefully passive-aggressive. He spots Emma (Zendaya) in a posh little coffee shop as she’s reading a book. When she steps away for a moment, he rushes over and snaps a photo so he can look up the book and pretend to have read it. He attempts to speak to her, only to be ignored because he’s speaking into her deaf ear. Despite this awkward first encounter, Emma is somehow smitten and willing to give him a chance, which leads to a first date. Awwww shucks. Not a bad story, especially as Charlie is trying to convince his pal Mike (Mamoudou Athie) that it’ll be good to tell as part of the wedding speech.

A major problem with The Drama is that we are never presented with any other reason for Charlie and Emma to be together. They are blank slates, and while that’s not too big of a deal for Charlie who is just kinda sleazy and weak, it severely hinders our view of Emma, whose life is racked by complications. For one thing, she admits to never having been in love until well into her 20s. So how can she know if what she has with Charlie is real? This question is posed matter-of-factly by her best friend Rachel (Alana Haim, playing the closest thing to a villain), and Emma has no answer.

Distributor A24 has gone out of its way to keep the plot’s key secret hidden, and I won’t spoil it here. But it involves a silly game where everyone is forced to admit the worst thing they’ve ever done. Mike has a rather pathetic story involving a dog and his ex-girlfriend; Rachel locked a slow-witted neighbor kid in a closet and left him there; and Charlie bullshitted around before admitting that he might’ve cyber-bullied someone. But Emma…well, her admission is so disturbing that it freaks everyone out. She was a teenager, and one bullied for no apparent reason other than her race.

Borgli doesn’t seem particularly interested in exploring the factors that nearly led Emma to commit a heinous act. The racial component is key. Emma is of mixed race, but perceptions of Black people as violent are prevalent. It’s no coincidence that as soon as Emma makes her admission, suddenly Charlie is terrified of her, and Rachel hates the very ground she walks on. This when, if you really break it down, some of the other admissions were way worse than Emma’s. So why the harsh judgment solely for her? Borgli has no answer and doesn’t even bother to try.

Where The Drama succeeds is in how Borgli mines humor from this ridiculously tense situation. Weddings are stressful enough, but as the day approaches, it becomes clear to everyone that this can’t go on, but Emma and Charlie are either too stubborn or too blind to see it. Charlie, a buttoned-up Brit, becomes a frazzled dufus who suddenly can’t even smile for the wedding photos or get it up during sex. Things get even worse when he asks his sexy co-worker (Hailey Gates, superb in a small role) the same dreaded question that caused this madness. Don’t they say that insanity is repeating the same thing and expecting a different result?  Let’s just say, the high stress level throughout will remind you of films by Ari Aster, who just so happens to be a producer.  When the wedding day arrives, it’s an understatement that the speeches are like a single car crash that grows into a 20-car pileup.

Zendaya continues to challenge herself with candid, risqué roles, with The Drama allowing her to show vulnerability we haven’t seen outside of Euphoria. And Pattinson, who isn’t someone I necessarily think of as funny, portrays Charlie’s descent into madness with flair and impressive physical comedy. Zendaya and Pattinson have incredible chemistry and keep this film together, and it’ll be interesting to see how much screen time they share in Dune: Part Three.  I wasn’t the biggest fan of Borgli’s most recent film, the surreal celebrity nightmare comedy Dream Scenario, as it suffered from the same shallowness that hinders The Drama. In both cases, being surface-level didn’t detract from their entertainment value, or keep them from becoming fiery conversation pieces. I suspect that there will be some highly-charged chatter between couples on the ride home from The Drama.

The Drama opens in theaters on April 3rd.

‘Masters Of The Universe’ Trailer: He-Man Has The Power In Mattel’s Long-Awaited Action Figure Adaptation

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE opens on June 5th

Like video game movies, studios have often tried to mine classic toy brands into successful franchises. There’s been little in the way of success, but Barbie changed that in 2023 with a whopping $1.4B box office. That put Mattel on the cinematic map, and the next film from the company is the long-developing Masters of the Universe, which has been in the works in various forms for more than two decades, but is finally happening with Amazon MGM Studios.

Nicholas Galitzine is the somewhat surprising choice to play Prince Adam/He-Man, joined by Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto, James Purefoy as King Randor, plus Charlotte Riley, Sasheer Zamata, and Kristen Wiig as the voice of Roboto.

Travis Knight, the Laika CEO best known for Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee, directs from a script by Chris Butler.

SYNOPSIS: In MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, Director Travis Knight brings the legendary franchise back to the big screen in this epic live-action adventure. After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.

Masters of the Universe hits theaters on June 5th, when it will square off against Scary Movie 6. As someone who grew up with pretty much every He-Man action figure ever created, I sincerely want this film to be good and successful.

Ryan Gosling To Star In Mystery Event Film From ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ Directors

After winning the Best Picture Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Once, the director duo known as Daniels, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, have flown under the radar. They dirercted an episode of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, while inking new deals with both A24 and Universal Pictures. The latter is for a mystery project that has faced its share of delays, but now we know when it does happen, it’ll be led by Ryan Gosling.

Deadline reports Gosling, fresh off the massive success of Project Hail Mary, will star in an untitled event film directed by Daniels for Universal Pictures. Plot details have been quiet since word on the project first broke in 2024, and that is unlikely to change any time soon. Universal has set a November 19th 2027 date, and with production due to begin this summer, it should hit that target.

To be fair, the Daniels have been trying to get this film off the ground for a while, but it’s taken time to come together. At one point, it was due to open this year on June 12th, but it got pulled and was replaced on the calendar by Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day. The filmmakers have set quite a high bar for themselves, and they’ve been grappling with how to follow a movie that won seven Oscars.

As for Gosling, he’s already got a busy 2027 ahead with Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter. T

‘Wasteman’ Trailer: David Jonsson And Tom Blyth Star In Gritty Prison Thriller Arriving Next Month

Tom Blyth and David Jonsson in WASTEMAN

A new trailer has dropped for the gritty UK prison thriller, Wasteman, starring Rye Lane and Alien: Romulus breakout David Jonsson, and The Hunger Games actor Tom Blyth. The film was one that I heard a lot of people buzzing about at TIFF last year, making me regret missing it. Fortunately, the wait to see it won’t be long as it opens on April 17th from Sunrise Films.

Directed by Cal McMau from a script by Hunter Andrews & Eoin Doran, Wasteman was once going to be produced by the Safdie Brothers, who decided to make Uncut Gems instead. But it tells you the quality material that McMau has to work with.

Here’s the synopsis: Taylor is branded a “wasteman” by society, his family and even in prison. In a world of drugs, parties, gangs and violence, so far, he’s managed to keep out of trouble. However, with the arrival of new cellmate Dee, the chance to make early parole and get his life back are put in jeopardy. Dee takes a shine to Taylor and helps him reconnect with the son he’s never met, giving Taylor the chance to be a dad. But behind bars nothing comes for free, and with Dee’s ambition to rise up and run the prison as ‘top boy’, he’s not only risking Taylor’s parole, he is also risking their lives.

Also in the cast are Alex Hassell, Corin Silva, Paul Hilton, and Ray BLK.

Jonsson is the best young actor working in the biz right now, in my opinion, and this looks like another showcase role for him.

‘I Love Boosters’ Trailer: Boots Riley’s Anti-Capitalism Comedy Stars Keke Palmer, Taylour Paige, And Naomi Ackie

I LOVE BOOSTERS opens May 22nd

Eight years after Boots Riley’s bold debut film Sorry to Bother You, and two years after the underrated series I’m a Virgo, the former rapper turned iconoclastic filmmaker is back with his latest, I Love Boosters. And based on everything we’ve seen, it’s exactly what you would expect from Riley: vivid, weird, and eye-popping.

Starring Naomi Ackie, Taylour Paige, and Keke Palmer, the story follows a crew of female shoplifters — led by Corvette (Palmer) and her crew, the Velvet Gang — who survive by “boosting” luxury clothing from department stores. They decide to target the CEO of a fashion brand for stealing and profiting from Corvette’s ideas, sparking a rebellious movement that spins out of their control.

No surprise with the plotline, as Boots has always been a political filmmaker who combines social commentary with absurdist storytelling. I always recommend folks check out his hip-hop work as part of The Coup, all of which serves as a prelude to the filmmaker he is now.

Also in the cast are LaKeith Stanfield, Eiza González, Poppy Liu, Will Poulter, Don Cheadle, Demi Moore, Jason Ritter, Kerris Dorsey, and Kara Young.

NEON has set a May 22nd release date for I Love Boosters, following its world premiere at SXSW earlier this month.

‘Tommy Karate’: Pete Davidson To Play Notorious Mafia Hitman In New Film; Paul Walter Hauser, Camila Mendes & Simon Rex Co-Star

Pete Davidson may not have had the longest tenure on SNL, but he’s really making the most of it. With roles coming up in David Michod’s stoner comedy Wizards!, and David Leitch’s How to Rob a Bank, Davidson is now adding another, his “dream job” with director Justin Chon.

Deadline reports Davidson will play infamous mafia hitman for the Bonanno crime family, Tommy Pitera, in the film Tommy Karate. Davidson co-wrote the screenplay with Chon and Joseph Gay.

Chon is an actor-turned-filmmaker whose career took off with the 2017 film, Gook, followed by the excellent 2021 drama, Blue Bayou.

Joining Davidson in the cast is Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning actor Paul Walter Hauser, who plays notorious DEA agent Jim Hunt and the man who tracked and took down Pitera. Also in the cast are Camila Mendes (Masters of the Universe) and Simon Rex (Red Rocket).

The film is based on Philip Carlo‘s true crime book The Butcher: Anatomy Of A Mafia Psychopath. Pitera was suspected of over 60 murders for the Bonanno crime family. Having learned martial arts at a young age, Pitera was known for using it in fights, which is how he earned the Tommy Karate nickname. Since 1992 he’s been serving a life sentence for six murders and running a massive drug operation.

I have a hard time buying Davidson as the psychopathic Pitera, but you never know! Maybe it’s the role he was born to play?

‘Lights Out’ Sequel In The Works, David F.Sandberg And James Wan To Produce

Teresa Palmer in LIGHTS OUT

Director David F. Sandberg’s career took off with the low-budget horror Lights Out, a cleverly expansion of his short film, that earned a whopping $148M back in 2016. Since then, Sandberg has moved on to bigger, but not necessarily better things, such as a pair of Shazam movies, Annabelle: Creation, and the video game adaptation Until Dawn, with more on the way. Now comes word from THR that a Lights Out sequel is in the works, too, but it’s unclear how involved Sandberg will be.

According to the report, Sandberg is aboard to produce Lights Out 2 alongside original writer Eric Heisserer. New Line Cinema has hired Connor Osborn McIntyre to write the screenplay, but there is no attached director. It’s possible that Sandberg returns, but he’s got a lot on his plate.  James Wan is also producing through his Atomic Monster label.

McIntyre is a writer on the rise. Next up for him is the script for Ben Affleck’s movie, Animals, which hits Netflix later this year.

Lights Out centered on a mother, played by Teresa Palmer, who must protect her child from an evil spirit that can only strike when the lights are off, forcing the family to seek ever-diminishing sources of light. A really cool premise that Sandberg brought to life on a budget under $5M.

Box Office: ‘Project Hail Mary’ Rockets To $300M, ‘They Will Kill You’ Is DOA With $5M

1. Project Hail Mary– $54.5M/$164.3M

Boosted by strong critical and audience word of mouth, Amazon MGM’s Project Hail Mary is the year’s first legit blockbuster. Holding strong in its second week, the feel-good sci-fi film dropped just 32% and earned another $54M for $164M domestically. Globally, the film has just crossed the $300M mark, as well. And that’s why you’re already starting to hear rumblings of a sequel.

2. Hoppers– $12.2M/$138.5M

After four weeks, Disney/Pixar’s Hoppers continues to be a powerhouse, and now has $138M domestically, $297M worldwide. This should all come to an end this week with the arrival of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie which is projected to have a huge $100M+ weekend.

3. They Will Kill You (review)- $5M

As we discussed on the recent Cinema Royale episode, the timing was just awful for Warner Bros. to drop They Will Kill You into theaters. The Zazie Beetz-led action flick bore striking similarities to last week’s Ready or Not 2, which itself has struggled. So it’s no surprise this weak $5M opening weekend, to go along with just 66% from crtics on Rotten Tomatoes, and 79% from audiences. The marketing strategy for this, featuring a bunch of moviegoers, influencers, and even a few film critics hyping up the film immediately after screenings

4. Dhurandhar the Revenge– $4.74M/$22.7M

5. Reminders of Him– $4.7M/$41M

6. Ready or Not 2: Here I Come– $4M/$16.2M

7. Scream 7– $2.6M/$118.6M

8. GOAT– $2.2M/$100.8M

Continuing what has already been an excellent year for family-friendly animation, Sony Pictures’ Roarball comedy GOAT has crossed $100M domestically, and has $180M globally. Not bad for an original, sports-themed film with Steph Curry as the biggest attached name.

9. undertone– $1.6M/$18.4M

10. Forbidden Fruits (review)- $1.1M

Sneaking into the top 10 was the witchy horror comedy Forbidden Fruits from IFC and Shudder, earning $1.1M from 1,525 locations. Lili Reinhart, Lola Tung, Victoria Pedretti, and Alexandra Shipp lead the film about a coven operating out of a shopping mall basement.  While I found the film disapponting, reviews have been decent critically with 77% on RT. Audiences felt differently with just 68%.

‘Heads Or Tails’ Trailer: John C. Reilly Is The Legendary Buffalo Bill In Italian Western Arriving Next Month

John C. Reilly as Buffalo Bill in HEADS OR TAILS

The myths of the American wild west have long struck a chord with international audiences, in particular Italians. It’s what gave birth to classic spaghetti Westerns that were so popular throughout the 1960s, and continue to influence the genre today. Filmmakers Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis (The Tale of King Crab) are no different, and play into that love of gunslinger lore with Heads or Tails, which boasts American actor John C. Reilly as the legendary Buffalo Bill.

The film stars Nadia Tereszkiewicz as Rosa, and Alessandro Borghi as Santino. Rosa, the abused wife of a rodeo showman, flees with Santino after a deadly challenge involving Buffalo Bill’s traveling Wild West show. As they attempt to escape to America, Bill is right on their trail.

Heads or Tails‘ fictional interpretation of Buffalo Bill was a collaborative effort with Reilly, according to Righi, who said recently to THR

“When John came on board, he was exactly what we were looking for, not only tonally. He also had some ideas and brought many insights into the character, including many ironic aspects, and what he could look like and what he could do. I remember John came up with how the character spoke. And he even proposed wearing the suit he wears in the second part of the film.”

Heads or Tails will open in theaters and digitally on April 10th courtesy of Samuel Goldwyn Films.
