Review: ‘God Is A Bullet’

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Maika Monroe, & Jamie Foxx Lead Nick Cassavetes' Raw, Unnerving Cult Revenge Flick

Prepare yourself. God is a Bullet is raw, unsparing, brutal in its depiction of violence in a depraved, soulless world. We shouldn’t be surprised the film is so unnerving. It comes to us from Nick Cassavetes, who despite giving us the ultimate depiciton of romance idealized in The Notebook, has been better at showing the world’s ugly side in films such as Alpha Dog and John Q. But those films can’t come close to this grisly, misogynistic tale of vengeance so filthy it’ll make you want to take a shower afterwards. You’ll feel gross for enjoying it so much.

Remember those brief spells in Game of Thrones when Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s Jamie Lannister would feign being a good and just person and not a total scumbag? Coster-Waldau brings a lot of that energy to the role of Bob Hightower, a small-town detective, a “desk jockey” as his chief indelicately put it, who goes hunting for the deadly cult that murdered his ex-wife, her current husband, and kidnapped Bob’s daughter for sex trafficking purposes. This bloody scene sets a vicious tone; if it’s too much for you here, then the rest might send you cowering into a corner.

A religious man whose faith has been shaken by this tragedy, Bob is the last person to know where to start looking for a sex trafficking cult. Fortunately, he finds help from Case Hardin, aka “Headcase”, played by the terrific actress Maika Monroe. Her body marked from head to toe in tattoos, as most of the folks in this movie are, Case has intimate knowledge of the cult leader, the wild-eyed maniac Cyrus (Karl Glusman). She also knows how Cyrus treats women; she has the scars, broken bones, and knocked-out teeth to prove it.

The amount of violence against women in God is a Bullet is off the charts, and should leave you squeamish. Women are punched, kicked, shot in the face multiple times, stabbed, and that’s when they’re not being berated or sexually manhandled. It’s all tough to watch, but fitting for this decrepid Hell that Bob has walked into willingly, and that Case has reentered for her own vengeful purposes.

Not that Bob and Case seem to know what they’re doing, exactly. This isn’t a movie where the heroes have a plan all laid out. They mostly just hang around all of the bad people they know are guilty until the situation gets untenable. And when that happens, people start dying…and dying in horrendous fashion. When someone gets shot in the face, you see the jaw hanging off of what remains of their skull. Bullets rip through flesh, blades leave a body a deformed, mangled mess. Those with weak stomachs need not apply.

Jamie Foxx has an odd role as The Ferryman, a one-armed tattoo artist stricken with Vitiligo, meaning his skin is covered in patches of white. January Jones, always such a porcelain goddess, gets dirtied up a little bit as a drunken trophy wife to a shady cop. Her storyline doesn’t seem to have much of a point until much later, and even when it does it still feels out of place. And that’s a big problem with God is a Bullet. At over 2 1/2 hours in length, there’s a lot of drag that could’ve been trimmed. It’s also a lot of time to spend in a world this grim. When a scene where Bob staples shut a gaping stomach wound is a cheerful highlight, you know things are rough.

Fortunately, Cassavetes has a cast of actors who are compelling enough to keep you keyed in. Coster-Waldau is fantastic as Bob, whose descent into this madness finds him contradicting his faith at every turn. He goes from a man of God to one who murders, gets tattoos, and basically reconsiders everything he ever knew. Meanwhile, Monroe, who has quietly been one of our best actresses since breaking out with 2012’s At Any Price, plays Case as a flawed and fearless avenger. After having walked away from Cyrus years earlier, she walks back into the lion’s den knowing it could mean her death, but there are some truths that are too important to ignore.

God is a Bullet isn’t an easy film, and that’s exactly how Cassavetes wanted it. An adaptation of Boston Teran’s novel, it’s like an elevated version of the edgy, gritty thrillers of the home video era.  It is gratuitous, gory, and trashy in the best ways, but would be even better with a tighter focus.

God is a Bullet is in theaters now, and will expand digitally on July 11th.

Maggie Q, Male Strippers, and Maniacs Fill the Trailer for ‘Fear the Night’

Maggie Q blows my mind every time I see her. No, it’s not because she is stunning to look at (though she is). Nope, it’s the fact that, even though she can’t weigh more then 100lbs soaking wet, she projects this palpable aura of ass-kickery that surpasses most MMA fighters.

Q gets to showcase this trait in Neil LaBute’s upcoming home invasion action flick Fear the Night. In it, Q plays Tess, an Iraqi war vet who heads to a secluded cabin with a group of friends for her sisters bachelor party. Unfortunately for this group of ladies there are a handful of sketchy looking gentlemen intent on raiding the house they are in and leaving no witnesses. Unfortunately for the sketchy looking gentlemen, Tess isn’t messing around.

The trailer looks like a fairly standard invasion movie of it’s type, the X factor is obviously the film’s star. It’s hard to tell if the movie will stand strong to an audience, some of what we see seems a little “80s one-liner” cheesy but if the action scenes are pulled off then that may not be a bad thing.

Seth Rollins Talks ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Role And His Future In Hollywood

Current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth “Freakin'” Rollins has a role in Captain America: Brave New World. A few weeks ago he was spotted on set, and rumors are he’ll play the villain Cobra. Hey, Rollins definitely has the look and laugh of a heel, even if right now he’s a babyface champ. Anyway, this is a huge role for Rollins, and he talked about it with DailyMail without giving much away…

“I am sworn to a certain level of secrecy, so I can’t divulge too much information on that. What I will say in response to your question is that it is cool, it’s cool to get opportunities to do something outside of your comfort zone.”

“This is what I love, WWE, professional wrestling, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do and all I ever intend to do as a career for as long as I can, but anytime you get to a certain level in this industry there’s going to be opportunities that come your way and I love taking chances at this point in my career.”

“[If] you get the chance to do something incredible outside of WWE, you’ve got to take a look at it, try and make it work the best you can because you only get one life and one chance and you never know when you might get an opportunity like that – so you got to make it happen.”

So does this role set Rollins in the same trajectory as other ex-WWE superstars such as John Cena, Dave Bautista, and Dwayne Johnson? Not necessarily…

“I don’t know where my future lies. I feel, like I said, at this moment wrestling is my future for as long as I can do it at a high level,” Rollins said. “But there’s going to come a day when falling down is going to turn my bones to dust and I will have to start looking elsewhere and seeing what other options there are. I don’t think that’s coming any time soon and I’m just in the prime of my career right now and there’s a lot of years ahead of me.”

Next up for Rollins? A title defense against one of his many longtime rivals, Finn Balor, at the Money in the Bank premium live event.

Captain America: Brave New World opens July 26th 2024.

DC Readers: Attend A Free Screening Of ‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’

We’re happy to offer our DC readers the chance to attend a free early screening of Universal and Dreamworks’ Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken!

SYNOPSIS: Sometimes the hero you are meant to be lies just beneath the surface.

Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise) is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but she mostly just feels invisible. She’s math-tutoring her skater-boy crush (Jaboukie Young-White, Ralph Breaks the Internet), who only seems to admire her for her fractals, and she’s prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because her over-protective supermom (Oscar® nominee Toni Collette, Knives Out), has forbade Ruby from ever getting in the water. But when she breaks her mom’s #1 rule, Ruby will discover that she is a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens and is destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother (Academy Award® winner Jane Fonda), the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas. The Kraken are sworn to protect the oceans of the world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids who have been battling with the Kraken for eons. There’s one major, and immediate, problem with that: The school’s beautiful, popular new girl, Chelsea (Emmy winner Annie Murphy, Schitt’s Creek) just happens to be a mermaid. Ruby will ultimately need to embrace who she is and go big to protect those she loves most.

The screening takes place Saturday, June 24th at 11:00AM at Regal Majestic in Silver Spring. If you’d to attend, RSVP at the Gofobo link here. Please remember all screenings are first come first served and you’ll need to arrive early to ensure seat. Enjoy the show.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken opens in theaters on June 30th.

‘Dumb Money’ Red Band Trailer: Paul Dano And Pete Davidson’s GameStop Gamble Breaks Wall Street

It’s funny that in 2021 during the worst of the pandemic when people were home playing video games more than ever, Gamestop became relevant for something else entirely. The video game retailer saw their stock short-squeezed by a bunch of ambitious Redditors, becoming everyday heroes who took on Wall Street and emerged victorious.

Craig Gillespie’s film Dumb Money stars Paul Dano as Keith Gill, who got the ball rolling by pouring his life savings into Gamestop stock. He was joined by other investors willing to gamble on the game retailer, throwing Wall Street for a loop.

Dano leads an incredible cast of Pete Davidson, Vincent D’Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Dane DeHaan, Sebastian Stan, Talia Ryder, Shailene Woodley, and Seth Rogen.  The film is based on Ben Mezrich‘s 2021 book The Antisocial Network.

Here’s the synopsis: Dumb Money is the ultimate David vs. Goliath tale, based on the insane true story of everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop (yes, the mall videogame store) into the world’s hottest company. In the middle of everything is regular guy Keith Gill (Paul Dano), who starts it all by sinking his life savings into the stock and posting about it. When his social posts start blowing up, so does his life and the lives of everyone following him. As a stock tip becomes a movement, everyone gets rich – until the billionaires fight back, and both sides find their worlds turned upside down.

Dumb Money opens in theaters on September 22nd.

‘Blue Beetle’ Director Says Film Is Part Of James Gunn’s New DCU

The question that hovers over every DC Comics movie this year is whether it’ll do enough to justify being part of James Gunn’s new DCU. So far, things haven’t turned out well for Shazam: Fury of the Gods or The Flash. There are still two movies left; Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and Blue Beetle. But at least for one of them we no longer need to speculate.

Speaking with Total Film, Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto confirms his film has made the cut and will be part of Gunn’s future plans…

“We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have been creating for the future installments of the DCU,” Soto said.

Soto continued, “But we are not tied to all the films from the past. Yes, our movie lives in the world where superheroes exist. But that doesn’t mean that a certain event, or certain alliance, or certain things from the past dictate where our film is going.”

In other words, don’t expect Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman to swing in to the rescue. We won’t see star Xolo Maridueña‘s Jaime Reyes hanging out with Billy Batson or anything like that. Instead, he’ll be part of the same universe that will introduce a new Superman.

Blue Beetle was initially planned as an exclusively HBO Max release before that idea got scrapped in favor of theatrical. Soto’s clearly seeing this as the first movie in a potential franchise centered on Reyes, a Latino college grad who gains superpowers when he is bonded to an alien Blue Beetle scarab.

“Our first movie, the way we wanted to do it, was always with the mentality that we wanted to do two more, at least,” Soto said. “And taking the traditional three-act structure of a story, we wanted our first movie to practically be the first act of a saga.”

Blue Beetle hits theaters on August 18th and co-stars Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon and George Lopez, and Becky G.

‘The Beanie Bubble’ Trailer: Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook, And Zach Galifianakis Star In Apple Film About The ’90s Toy Craze

Who needs product placement when you can just make entire movies about said product’s rise to popularity? This year has already some great films about popular product launches, such as Tetris, Flamin’ Hot, and Blackberry. But how about Beanie Babies? Remember that momentarily red-hot fad that drove legions of people to crazily collect the little dolls? For that, there’s the Apple Original film The Beanie Bubble.

Based on the book by Zac Bissonnette about the Beanie Baby insanity of the ’90s, The Beanie Bubble is a comedy starring Zach Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook, and Geraldine Viswanathan. The film is co-directed by Kristin Gore (yes, she’s Al Gore’s daughter) and her husband, OK Go frontman Damian Kulash. Kulash also provides music for the film along with Nathan Barr.

Here’s the synopsis: Why did the world suddenly treat stuffed animals like gold? Ty Warner was a frustrated toy salesman until his collaboration with three women grew his masterstroke of an idea into the biggest toy craze in history. “The Beanie Bubble” is an inventive story about what and who we value, and the unsung heroes whose names didn’t appear on the heart-shaped tag.

The Beanie Bubble will get a limited theatrical release on July 21st, followed by Apple TV+ on July 28th.

‘El Muerto’, Bad Bunny’s Wrestling-Themed Spider-Man Film Pulled From Sony Release Schedule

Bad news for Bad Bunny fans eager to see him make his Marvel debut in Sony’s El Muerto film. THR confirms that Sony Pictures has pulled the film off of its release date schedule. The wrestling-themed Spider-Man spinoff was to open on Jan. 12th 2024.

Rapper, global phenom, and hardcore WWE fan/performer Bad Bunny was to take the lead role of El Muerto, a Spider-Man antihero and the son of a famous luchadore aka Mexican wrestler.

The ongoing WGA strike is said to be the cause for Sony making this move, as El Muerto still needed work done on the screenplay as of last spring and nothing could be done. Jonás Cuarón (Desierto) is in line to direct whenever shooting can finally begin. But this could be wishful thinking as Bad Bunny’s incredibly busy schedule could delay things further, or cause him to drop out altogether.

El Muerto isn’t officially canceled, just off the schedule for now. Rumors are The Mandalorian‘s Mercedes Varnado aka Mercedes Monety and formerly WWE superstar Sasha Banks was up for a role, with Marvin Jones III (aka rapper Krondon) reportedly eyed to play Tombstone. Jones voiced Tombstone in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, too.

‘Sheroes’ Interview: Sasha Luss On Kicking Butt And Blowing Sh*t Up In New Female-Led Action Flick

If you were to cross the visual style and attitude of Spring Breakers with the self-aware tone and over-the-top action of Charlie’s Angels, the result would look something like Sheroes. The all-female action flick centers on four best friends from different backgrounds whose trip to Thailand is thrown into chaos when one is kidnapped by a drug cartel. But rather than turning to the corrupt police for help, these ladies band together and take the fight to them to save their friend.

Leading the cast is model and actress Sasha Luss, in her first major role since breaking out in a pair of Luc Besson actioners, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and 2019’s assassin thriller Anna.

In Sheroes, Luss plays Diamond, whose lust for life is only matched by the loyalty to her friends. Luss is joined in the cast by Wallis Day (Batwoman), Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan), and Skai Jackson (Bunk’d).

I had the pleasure of speaking with Sasha Luss about Sheroes, her background in modeling and ballet and how they inform her acting, and of course kicking butt with all of these awesome ladies.

Sheroes opens in select theaters and digitally on June 23rd!

‘Priscilla’ Teaser: Cailee Spaeny Is Priscilla Presley, Jacob Elordi Is Elvis In Sofia Coppola’s Upcoming Film

What was it like being married to Elvis Presley? To be the envy of every woman in the world? We got a glimpse of what it was like for Priscilla Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, and it wasn’t as surreal as it appeared to be to outsiders. In Sofia Coppola’s new film, Priscilla, we get a look at their marriage as told entirely from her perspective.

Taking on the role of Priscilla Presley is Pacific Rim: Uprising star Cailee Spaeny, with Euphoria‘s Jacob Elordi as Elvis. Coppola pulls double-duty as writer/director, adapting Priscilla Presley’s 1985 biography, Elvis and Me.

Coppola is best known for directing Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides, and Marie Antoinette. Her last feature film was 2020’s On the Rocks.

Here’s the synopsis: When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a vulnerable best friend. Through Priscilla’s eyes, Sofia Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage, from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland, in this deeply felt and ravishingly detailed portrait of love, fantasy, and fame.

As we saw with Austin Butler, tackling the role of Elvis could be the path to acclaim and potential awards. The same goes for Spaeny as Priscilla. Spaeny has been on the cusp of breaking out and this could be the part that does it. Clearly, A24 has high hopes for Priscilla as they plan to release it this October.
