‘Tron: Ares’ Director Expresses Frustration As Strikes Delay Start Of Production

It was no sure thing for Disney to greenlight Tron: Ares. While the original 1982 Tron was a cult hit, the sequel Tron: Legacy was a disappointment when it arrived more than two decades later. Given all of the cost-cutting measures at Disney lately, it wouldn’t be surprising if they pulled the plug, which has to make director Joachim Rønning want to get it done as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, that ain’t happening due to the WGA and SAG strikes. In an Instagram post, Rønning revealed that production on Tron: Ares has been delayed indefinitely, with much of the crew laid off due to the current stoppage. While you can sense his frustration, it’s also clear that he supports both strikes and for writers and actors getting fair compensation.

Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on TRON: ARES (a movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human). Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone.

“The AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA and WGA need to speed up the negotiating process and not leave the table until it’s done. This is Hollywood. We close deals for breakfast. Why do we suddenly have all the time in the world when every day is so precious? These tactics are extremely frustrating. It’s time for diplomacy so we can get back to work – under conditions that are fair to everybody.”.

The absolute best moments of my career have been watching an actor perform in front of the camera – taking the scene and the text to a higher place. I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with amazing talent. It’s a huge part of why I’m a filmmaker. However, like myself, being an actor or a writer, means you’re a freelancer. And I can tell you, the constant uncertainty is not for everyone. To that end I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask for a better safety net.

He added, “Many of my best friends are writers. Everything starts with the story. Everything starts with you. That must continue. And that means that AI needs to be regulated. There is no doubt about the threat the technology poses to all creatives.”

Unless Disney gets cold feet during this delay, Tron: Ares should get moving once the strikes are over. And then we can see how Jared Leto holds up in The Grid.

‘The Persian Version’ Trailer: Maryam Keshavarz’s Sundance Award Winner Opens In October

The fall awards season is right around the corner, and there are still some stragglers from Sundance that could make an impact. One of the festival’s pleasant surprises was Maryam Keshavarz’s The Persian Version, which came away with the Audience Award and another for the filmmaker’s screenplay.

Keshaavarz tells a familiar tale of balancing family expectations with one’s own dreams. Layla Mohammadi stars as Leila, an Iranian-American woman who returns home after a medical emergency and tries to navigate complicated relationships with her family while also keeping the other side of her life separate from them.

Also in the cast are Nioshua Noor, Bijan Daneshmand, and Kamand Shafieisabat.

Here’s the synopsis: Coming from two countries at odds with each other, Iranian-American Leila (Layla Mohammadi) strives to find balance and embrace her opposing cultures, while boldly challenging the labels society is so quick to project upon her. When her family reunites in New York City for her father’s heart transplant, Leila navigates her relationships at arm’s length in an effort to keep her “real” life separate from her family life. However, when her secret is unceremoniously revealed, so are the distinct parallels between her life and that of her mother Shireen (Niousha Noor). Punctuated by a bright color palette, snappy comedic relief, and vibrant dance numbers, “The Persian Version” delivers an honest portrayal of a woman who remains unapologetically herself, blended seamlessly into a heartfelt story about family, belonging, and the undeniable influence of pop music. Winning both the Audience Award and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, writer-director-producer Maryam Keshavarz delivers a universal and timely story of the Iranian and the Iranian-American experience

The Persian Version opens in theaters on October 13th.

‘A Million Miles Away’ Trailer: Michael Peña Is An Underdog With Faraway Dreams

Making it to outer space is a dream held by millions, but only a select few will ever get that chance. Now imagine you’re a migrant farm worker and having a goal of such magnitude. The odds of it happening must be so long as to seem impossible. And yet it did happen for  José Hernández, and it’s his true story that is told in the upcoming film, A Million Miles Away.

Michael Peña stars as Hernández, the first migrant worker ever to become a NASA astronaut. Joining Peña is a talented cast that includes Rosa Salazar, Bobby Soto, Saraya Blue, Garret Dillahunt, Veronica Falcon, and Julio Cesar Cadillo.

Lots of Narcos alums in this film, which is a very good thing. Even director Alejandra Marquez directed episodes of the hit Netflix show, along with Northern Skies Over Empty Space and The Good Girls.

Here’s the synopsis: Inspired by the real-life story of NASA flight engineer José Hernández, A Million Miles Away follows him and his devoted family of proud migrant farm workers on a decades-long journey, from a rural village in Michoacán, Mexico, to the fields of the San Joaquin Valley, to more than 200 miles above the Earth in the International Space Station. With the unwavering support of his hard-working parents, relatives, and teachers, José’s unrelenting drive & determination culminates in the opportunity to achieve his seemingly impossible goal. Acclaimed writer and director Alejandra Márquez Abella has created a dazzling tribute to the loyalty and tenacity of the entire Hernández family, as well as anyone who dares to dream.

Prime Video will premiere A Million Miles Away on September 15th.

‘Maestro’ Trailer: Bradley Cooper Directs And Stars With Carey Mulligan In Leonard Bernstein Biopic

Carey Mulligan and Bradley cooper in MAESTRO

Bradley Cooper struck gold with his directorial debut, A Star is Born, earning eight Oscar nominations and one victory. Now he returns with his sophomore effort, Maestro, in which he transforms to become famed composer Leonard Bernstein.

Directed and co-written by Cooper, who also stars as Bernstein, the film centers on the composer’s life with a focus on his rocky 25-year marriage to actress Felicia Montealegre Bernstein, played by Carey Mulligan.

Bernstein is best known for his hit Broadway musical, West Side Story. His marriage to Felicia was complicated by his bisexuality, which he kept hidden for much of his life. The two managed to support one another through the tough times, even as they were judged harshly by the outside world.

The film also stars Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, Megan Twohey, Sarah Silverman, Josh Hamilton, Scott Ellis, Gideon Glick, Sam Nivola, Alexa Swinton, and Miriam Shor.

Maestro hits select theaters on November 22nd, before moving to Netflix on December 20th.

‘The Harder They Fall’ Sequel Teased By Director Jeymes Samuel

Was there a movie more cool in 2021 than The Harder They Fall? Shot like the hottest music video ever by director Jeymes Samuel, and with a cast led by Jonathan Majors, Zazie Beetz, Regina King, Idris Elba, Danielle Deadwyler, LaKeith Stanfield, and more, the all-Black Western made a surprising impact on the awards season, and had fans clamoring for a sequel.

While nothing has been made official by Netflix, Samuel recently told a fan on social media that a sequel to The Harder They Fall is coming. The exchange is brief…

Assuming this is really happening, would it again be at Netflix? And who of the original cast would be returning? Majors would probably be a tough call right now, right? Regardless, just the chance that a sequel could happen is going to make a lot of people happy, including yours truly.

Interview: Cory Finley Talks ‘Landscape With Invisible Hand’, Unusual Alien Invasions, Creative World Building, And More

Cory Finley’s third feature, Landscape with Invisible Hand, is an unusual brand of alien invasion movie. There isn’t an invasion at all. The extraterrestrial Vuvv arrived and purchased the Earth and all of humanity, putting most people out of work and into poverty. The only way for a lot of people to make money is to stream their lives to the Vuvv as entertainment, since they find human relationships, in particular love stories, so fascinating.

I had the good pleasure of speaking with Cory Finley about Landscape with Invisible Hand. In our conversation, I told him how his film ended my streak of bad movies to close out Sundance. We talked about what drove him to adapt M.T. Anderson’s book, and any challenges in doing an alien invasion movie that goes against the grain. We also talked about how he wanted to depict the Vuvv visually, and his eagerness to work with star Tiffany Haddish.

Landscape with Invisible Hand opens in theaters on August 18th.

‘Rebel’ Trailer: A Family Tries To Save Their Child From Radicalization In New Drama From ‘Bad Boys For Life’ Directors

If you think you know filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah because they made Bad Boys for Life and the shelved Batgirl movie, think again. The duo also completed an acclaimed Cannes drama, Rebel, that is due to hit theaters later this year, and the first trailer for it has arrived.

El Arbi and Fallah wrote and directed Rebel, which centers on a Muslim family’s efforts to save their youngest son from radicalization.

Aboubakr Bensaihi, Lubna Azabal, Amir El Arbi, Tara Abboud, and Younes Bouab lead the cast. Kevin Meul and Jan van Dyck joined in on the screenplay.

It’s clear that El Arbi and Fallah are refusing to be pigeonholed as filmmakers, tackling a broad range of subjects in different styles.

Here’s the synopsis: “Rebel,” the dazzling and audacious new film from Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys for Life, Batgirl), tells the story of Kamal (Aboubakr Bensaihi), who resolves to change his life for the better, leaving Belgium to help war victims in Syria. But, having arrived, he is forced to join a militia and is left stranded in Raqqa. Back home, his younger brother Nassim (Amir El Arbi) quickly becomes easy prey for radical recruiters, who promise to reunite him with his brother. Their mother, Leila (Lubna Azabal), fights to protect the only thing she has left: her youngest son.

Rebel opens in theaters on September 15th.

‘Totally Killer’ First Look: Kiernan Shipka Stars In Blumhouse And Prime Video’s Time Travel Slasher Comedy

The partnership between Amazon Prime Video and Blumhouse, which has already given us the Welcome to the Blumhouse anthology, continues with teen time travel slasher-comedy Totally Killer. Before the film arrives on October 6th and while we wait for a trailer, Prime Video has dropped some first-look images featuring stars Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, Julie Bowen, and Randall Park.

Shipka stars as a 17-year-old who finds herself accidentally traveling back in time to 1987, the year of the original killings by the “Sweet Sixteen Killer”, who has just arrived in the present day to kill again.

Behind the camera is Always Be My Maybe director Nahnatchka Khan, reuniting with Park on this one. The scrript is by Jen D’Angelo, David Matalon, and Sasha Perl-Raver.

Also in the cast are Charlie Gillespie, Lochlyn Munro, Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson, Liana Liberato, Kelcey Mawema, Anna Diaz, Stephi Chin-Salvo, Ella Choi, Jeremy Monn-Djasgnar, Nathaniel Appiah, and Jonathan Potts.

Synopsis: Thirty-five years after the shocking murder of three teens, the infamous “Sweet Sixteen Killer“ returns on Halloween night to claim a fourth victim. Seventeen-year-old Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) ignores her overprotective mom’s (Julie Bowen) warning and comes face-to-face with the masked maniac and, on the run for her life, accidentally time travels back to 1987, the year of the original killings. Forced to navigate the unfamiliar and outrageous culture of the 1980s, Jamie teams up with her teen mom (Olivia Holt) to take down the killer once and for all, before she’s stuck in the past forever.
This looks fantastic to me, kind of like a mix of Final Girls and Happy Death Day. Can’t wait to see what the trailer looks like, and hopefully it arrives soon.
