Review: ‘Expend4bles’

Now We Know Why Sylvester Stallone Was So Eager To Escape This Sequel Misfire

When The Expendables detonated theaters in 2010, it was like a dream come true for a certain type of moviegoer, and I am that guy. I grew up on the big muscles, bigger guns action movies of the ’80s and ’90s, with stars the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and more. And they were all going to be in the same movie (!!!), with loads of other screen heavyweights such as Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren. But, after thirteen years and now the fourth movie, horribly stylized as Expend4bles, the clip is out of ammo on this franchise that has NEVER lived up to its potential, and this is the worst of them all.

Although Lundgren has reportedly stated the budget at $100MExpend4bles is one shoddy piece of crap, with digital explosions that look like they were created using an N64, and stagey locales that take you right out of the action. Plenty of movies are shot on soundstages but they don’t all look like it as much as this one does. It’s no wonder Stallone tried multiple times to get away from this movie, dropping out completely at one point before being dragged back in; this movie is so far beneath him. You can practically see him slinking towards the exits during the brief time he’s actually around.

That’s right, Stallone doesn’t have a lot to do with this story. His Barney Ross does return as leader of the Expendables, a paramilitary unit that does the tough missions the government doesn’t want any responsibility for. But this movie belongs to Sly’s co-star, Jason Statham, who returns once again as Lee Christmas. You can see how this movie started life as a Christmas-focused solo spinoff, because the story is all about him. Christmas has a new girlfriend, fellow Expendables member Gina, played by Megan Fox. They fight all of the time. Relationships are hard in this business, y’know?

The barebones plot finds the team sent to Libya to stop a deadly mercenary named Rahmat, played by the awesome and utterly wasted Iko Uwais (of The Raid fame) from stealing a bunch of nuclear detonators that could start WWIII. There’s also the looming threat of a mysterious baddie named Ocelot, who shares a past with Barney. But during the assault, the Expendables are severely overmatched and a key member of the team falls in battle. The rest of the film finds Christmas, who has been kicked out for disobeying orders, driven by revenge to get his hands on Rahmat.

It seems like every Expendables movie has missed the point a little bit more. As the roster has changed time and time again, with the biggest names all refusing to return, new supporting players are brought in to fill the gaps and create a youth movement. That leads to the addition of Megan Fox, who I will admit is genuinely pretty good here as Gina. Fox has been doing a ton of direct-to-VOD action movies lately and she’s at least credible, and still a halfway decent actress when she wants to be. You can clearly see the bones of a Gina/Christmas spinoff movie being set up, and I would be all for that. But other characters are just wastes of space with nothing to do. Randy Couture is back as Toll Road, but all he does is look REALLY OLD while talking about his cauliflower ears; Lundgren’s Gunner sports bifocals and can’t do the one thing he’s assigned to do, which is be a sniper. 50 Cent basically plays himself, and even rocks his own music, as Easy Day, proving himself to still be a bad actor even by Expendables standards. Jacob Scipio plays sex-obsessed member, Galan, the son of Antonio Banderas’ former character, Galgo. I’m pretty sure Banderas must’ve dropped out and this was the easy way of not having to rewrite the script too much. Levy Tran, previously best known for looking hot in a Fast & Furious movie, at least gets a whip to play with this time. And Goddammit, the awesome Tony Jaa, of Ong-Bak legendary status, sees his muay thai skills reduced to nothing in a film that was not built to support his presence.

The Expendables always have some government goon who tells them where to go and what to do, and that role is played by Andy Garcia as Marsh. At least Garcia, who is hamming it up like crazy, seems to be having a good time. His character is awful and telegraphs everything a mile away, but at least Garcia isn’t sleepwalking through it like Stallone is.

If this were a Statham solo movie it might’ve actually worked out okay. Statham can still kick ass and crack tough guy jokes with the best of them, and his fights are impressive as ever. He has some really solid banter with Fox and Stallone, too. This just shouldn’t have been an Expendables movie, because it undermines the entire purpose of the team if Christmas can handle everything by himself while they twiddle their thumbs.

Expend4bles is like the last studio compilation album from your favorite band released long after they have already broken up. With a lack of star power, a lousy plot, and some truly embarrassing CGI, this Expend4bles is dud that never should’ve happened in the first place.

Expend4bles opens in theaters on September 22nd.

‘The Kill Room’ Trailer: Samuel L. Jackson And Uma Thurman Scam The Art World In New Dark Comedy

You see Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Thurman’s daughter Maya Hawke in the same movie, and you’d be forgiven for thinking Tarantino had finally decided on Kill Bill 3. But you’d be wrong. They’re instead part of The Kill Room, an art world crime comedy arriving next week.

Directed by Nicol Paone (Friendsgiving), with a cast that includes Joe Manganiello, Debi Mazar, and Dree Hemingway, The Kill Room centers on a struggling art dealer who enters into a criminal scheme with an artistic hitman and his boss. But what happens when their fraud is upended by the hitman’s art becoming the talk of the art world?

This looks pretty silly, but you can’t ignore that cast.

The Kill Room opens in theaters on September 29th. Check out the synopsis and trailer below.

SYNOPSIS: THE KILL ROOM is a dark comedy / crime-thriller about a hitman (Manganiello), his boss (Jackson), an art dealer (Thurman,) and their money laundering scheme that accidentally turns the hitman into an overnight, avant garde sensation, forcing the dealer to play the art world against the underworld.

The Trailer for the Jason Mamoa Narrated Documentary ‘Deep Rising’ Shows the Care Needed in Securing a Green Future

Every day I become more and more convinced that humanity’s legacy in this world will be showing the galaxy just how long one can avoid learning from one’s mistakes. With climate change’s effects becoming more of a today problem then a tomorrow problem the promise of green energy and electric cars seemed like a possible way through. Of course, I was forgetting the golden rule of life, “everything in moderation”. In a global capitalist economy there is no such thing as moderation.

Deep Rising, an upcoming documentary narrated and executive produced by Aquaman himself, Jason Mamoa, takes a deep dive (pun fully intended) on the subject of renewable energy and how it will be powered by metallic nodules found only on the sea floor. More importantly it digs into how we much interact responsibly with the environment here and not repeat the mistakes of the past (and really present…we’re still making those mistakes).

The trailer below does a great job at highlighting the two sides of the story, with one side showcasing the entrepreneurs hoping to scrape the seafloor to collect “the world’s most valuable asset” and the other showing those that warn of the inevitable consequences and eradication of life that we haven’t even begun to understand. At the center is the of everything is the ultra-secretive ISA, or International Seabed Authority who will ultimately decide how companies can interact with the resources found deep below.

The trailer calls this an “Urgent” documentary…I couldn’t agree more. Just based on the little I’ve learned from these 2 minutes anything we do at the depths needs to be done with the utmost care. Think of all of the things we don’t know about life that deep, the cure for disease or a way to reverse climate change could lie in something there but, already, we’re ready to wipe it out for a few billon bucks.

Official Synopsis:
DEEP RISING, narrated and executive produced by Jason Momoa, takes viewers on an epic journey from the ocean’s depths to the future of sustainable energy. Through awe-inspiring footage of the deep’s most dazzling creatures, this feature-length documentary illuminates the secrets of the deep ocean and how its fate holds the key to our survival. In a riveting tale of geopolitical, corporate and scientific intrigue, DEEP RISING sheds light on the secretive International Seabed Authority (ISA), responsible for nearly half our planet’s surface on the ocean floor, while highlighting the vital need to protect the seabed as the common heritage of humankind and stressing the urgency of responsible choices for future generations.

‘Tracy Flick Can’t Win’: Alexander Payne Won’t Rush His ‘Election’ Sequel With Reese Witherspoon

Next month, Alexander Payne returns to theaters with The Holdovers, reuniting with his Sideways star Paul Giamatti. But fans of Payne are eager to hear about what he’s planning to direct next, and if it will be the long-awaited Election sequel, Tracy Flick Can’t Win. Well, according to Payne, you might not want to set your watch to it.

Speaking with Collider, Payne says there’s still a long way to go before we see overachiever Tracy Flick again…

“Tom Perotta, who wrote the book “Election,” has written a very fine sequel, and Reese Witherspoon and I have talked about it,” Payne revealed. “And Jim Taylor and I, my co-writer, have talked about doing it. But we just haven’t gotten to it yet. It’s only because everything takes a while, and I have a couple things to do before that. We’ll just see how it falls. It would be lovely to do.”

As Payne mentioned, Reese Witherspoon is all set to return as Tracy Flick as she continues her climb to the top of the political heap, only now as an adult.

So it doesn’t sound like this is a sure thing at all, and eager fans might want to temper their expectations. Tracy Flick Can’t Win may or may not happen, and even if it does, the wait could be substantial.

‘When Evil Lurks’ Trailer: A Small Town Is Hit By Demonic Possessions In New IFC/Shudder Horror

If there’s a rule when it comes to horror movies about demonic possession, curses, whatever, it’s that simply moving away is never an option. They’ll just follow you, or like in the case of Haunted Mansion, find some other trickery to lure you back. Well, that’s sort of the premise behind Demián Rugna’s new horror, When Evil Lurks, which made a splash recently at TIFF.

Starring Ezequiel Rodríguez and Demián Salomón, the story centers on brothers who accidentally unleash an epidemic of demonic possessions when they improperly try to exorcise a demon infection from their land, and then unsuccessfully attempt an escape.

I’m a huge fan of this core premise because it’s something different from the well-worn possession subgenre of horror.

IFC Films will release When Evil Lurks into theaters on October 6th, followed by Shudder on October 27th.

SYNOPSIS: The residents of a small rural town discover that a demon is about to be born among them. They desperately try to escape before the evil is born, but it may be too late.

‘Deadpool 3’: Shawn Levy Says Fox-Marvel Legacy Is Part Of The Story

Fans have a ton of reasons to be looking forward to Deadpool 3, starting with the long-awaited pairing of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, the most popular characters from the defunct Fox Marvel universe. This will also be the first R-rated movie in the MCU, promising the edgy tone of the prior Deadpool films isn’t going anywhere. And now we know from director Shawn Levy that the Fox legacy, which took the X-Men franchise to incredible heights, will be more than just a running gag…it will be a major part of the story.

Levy told Total Film in a new interview…

“Deadpool and Wolverine are iconic Marvel characters; more specifically, iconic Marvel-of-the-Fox-era characters.”We’re not going to pretend: ‘Oh, we snap our fingers, and suddenly that Fox legacy doesn’t exist, and it shaped a lot of what we now know as the MCU.’ Fox also shaped Ryan’s career, Hugh’s career and my career. So there’s a lot of history there, and there’s a lot of Marvel history at Fox. And certainly that’s a part of our storytelling.”

Deadpool and Logan were first seen on the big screen together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a critically panned 2009 movie that introduced the mouthless version of Deadpool that nobody liked.

Other than Wolverine and Deadpool, the only Fox character confirmed to return is Elektra, who was played by Jennifer Garner in Daredevil and her own solo movie. Rumors persist that Channing Tatum will finally suit up as Gambit, since that solo film never got off the ground despite years of teases at Fox.

Regulars set to return include Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Rob Delaney as Peter, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio.

Emma Corrin is rumored to be playing Charles Xavier’s evil twin Cassandra Nova, while Succession‘s Matthew Macfadyen has a mysterious role.

Deadpool 3 opens on September 6th 2024.

‘All Of Us Strangers’ Trailer: Andrew Haigh’s Romantic-Fantasy Stars Paul Mescal And Andrew Scott

Looking further into this awards season, there are certain films that you can bet are sure things. One of those is Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers, which not only stars Andrew Scott (Fleabag) and recent Oscar nominee Paul Mescal (Aftersun), but has been riding high on the critical acclaim from its Telluride world premiere. Given the accolades for Haigh’s previous films, Weekend, 45 Years, and Lean On Pete, he can be counted on to be a regular presence this time of year.

Mescal and Scott are joined by Claire Foy and Jamie Bell in the adaptation of Taichi Yamada’s novel, Strangers. Here’s the synopsis:

One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (Andrew Scott) has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbor, Harry (Paul Mescal), which punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As a relationship develops between them, Adam is preoccupied with memories of the past and finds himself drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up and the childhood home where his parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) appear to be living, just as they were on the day they died, 30 years before.

All of Us Strangers opens in theaters on December 22nd.

‘In The Fire’ Trailer: Amber Heard Stars In Supernatural Thriller Opening On Friday The 13th

It’s kind of a wild time to have two Amber Heard movies coming within a short time of one another. She’s been a polarizing figure since her public falling out with Johnny Depp, and the defamation case against him which she lost. And like him, she could start losing out on some pretty big roles very soon, with rumors that her role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was drastically reduced. Still, Heard is a big name and a talented actress, which she’ll get to show in her new movie, In the Fire.

Heard stars with Eduardo Noriega (Transsiberian) in the 19th-century supernatural thriller about a New York psychiatrist who heads to a small Colombian village to treat an autistic boy who may or may not be possessed by a demon.

The film is directed and co-written by Conor Allyn, who previously helmed the Frank Grillo-led Western drama, No Man’s Land.

Here’s the synopsis: A doctor from New York (Amber Heard) travels to a remote plantation in the 1890s to care for a disturbed boy who seems to have inexplicable abilities. She begins treating the child, but in doing so ignites a war of science versus religion with the local priest who believes the boy is possessed by the Devil and is the reason for all the village’s woes.

In the Fire hits theaters and VOD on October 13th.

Chris Evans Keeps Door Open To Possible Captain America Return: “I’ll Never Say Never.”

Chris Evans is suiting up again for AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY

Although Anthony Mackie has long since been passed the shield of Captain America, and is set to star in his first solo movie in next year’s Captain America: Brave New World, fans have never stopped asking about the first guy to rock the stars and stripes. Will Chris Evans ever return to the MCU? He seemed pretty eager to get out and do other things, but in an interview with GQ, Evans doesn’t shut the door completely.

“Yeah, maybe,” Evans said when asked about an MCU return. “I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. But I’m also very precious with it. It’s something that I am very proud of. And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing. So, no time soon.”

So you’re saying there’s a chance?

As long as the MCU keeps chugging along, I think it’s inevitable that Evans returns in some fashion. But even if that never happens, Evans is happy that he got to be part of something truly special…

“You kind of feel like you were just lucky enough to go along for the ride. It’s like winning the Super Bowl, but you weren’t Tom Brady. I mean, you were on the team. You might have had a couple good plays, but it’s not your victory to own. You are a part of it, which is wonderful. And you’re a part of a cultural phenomenon. That was the beauty of working on Marvel films. You never really had to be front and center. Even in your own films sometimes. Quentin Tarantino said it recently, and I was like, you know, he’s right. The character is the star. You’re there, but you don’t feel the burden of it.”

Next up for Evans is the pharmaceutical crime film Pain Hustlers which opens in October.

‘Old Dads’ Trailer: Bill Burr Is An Out-Of-Touch Father In His Directorial Debut

You’ll never guess, but cranky old comedian Bill Burr has made a movie in which he plays…a cranky old man. Hey, give your audience what they like, right? Burr’s directorial debut, Old Dads, sees him starring alongside Bokeem Woodbine and Bobby Cannavale.

As seen in the new trailer, Burr, Woodbine, and Cannavale play three friends who become fathers late in life and are woefully out of touch with anyone younger than themselves, a big problem to have when your kids are in school.

Burr was a workhorse on this one, not only as star, director, producer, but also co-writer alongside Ben Tishler. The rest of the cast includes Katie Aselton, Reign Edwards, Rachael Harris, Miles Robbins, and Jackie Tohn.

Here’s the synopsis: A cranky middle-aged dad and his two best friends find themselves out of step in a changing world of millennial CEOs and powerful preschool principals.

Old Dads hits Netflix on October 20th.
