Angel 2026 Trailers: Alan Ritchson & Owen Wilson In ‘Runner’, Tommy Lee Jones In ‘Angel And The Badman’ Remake, And More

It was a huge day for Angel Studios at CinemaCon, which is taking place right now in Las Vegas. The studio known for its “value-based”, often Christian-themed content is expanding in a big way, and at today’s presentation, it announced multiple huge projects with some pretty big names attached. These are movies that I think some people are going to want to show up for, or at least they managed to catch my attention.  Here are the ones that did.

We already know about Andy Serkis’ animated Animal Farm adaptation (trailer here), which hits theaters on May 1st. So let’s take a peek at the rest…

Opening on July 3rd is Young Washington, directed by Jon Erwin (I Can Only Imagine) and starring William Franklyn-Miller as a young George Washington prior to the American Revolution. Also in the cast are Kelsey Grammer, Mary-Louise Parker, and Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley.

SYNOPSIS: Before he was the Father of a Nation, he was a soldier fighting to survive. A single misstep thrusts young George Washington into the center of a global conflict, testing his honor, loyalty, and courage. As alliances crumble and the frontier erupts into war, he must confront not only his enemies but the man he’s becoming. This is the untold story of Young Washington.

Hitting theaters on August 14th is Cold War era Reagan-Gorbachev drama The Brink of War, directed by Michael Russell Gunn and starring Emmy Award winner Jeff Daniels, Jared Harris, Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons, and Hope Davis, along with Branka Katić, Aya Cash, and Guy Burnet.

It’s kinda interesting to see ultra-liberal Jeff Daniels playing the conservative icon, Ronald Reagan.

Synopsis: President Reagan races against time to salvage a deal with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev that could dismantle nuclear arsenals – or ignite disaster. With pressure mounting on all sides, every word spoken brings the world closer to peace or destruction.

Definitely right up my alley and arriving on September 11th is Runner, an action flick from Expend4bles director Scott Waugh that teams Owen Wilson and Alan Ritchson. Damn! Also in the cast are Rodrigo Santoro, Leila George, Kate Box, Peta Sergeant, Geraldine Hakewill, Cecilia Toussaint, and Scarlett Crabtree.

Synopsis: A former soldier is thrown into a brutal race against time when a critical medical delivery makes him the target of a ruthless cartel. With betrayal closing in from every side, he must survive the chase and deliver his cargo before an innocent child runs out of time.

The 1947 John Wayne western classic Angel and the Badman gets a reimagining led by Tommy Lee Jones, Zachary Levi, and Neal McDonough. Opening this October, the film is directed by Julio Quintana.

SYNOPSIS: When feared outlaw Quirt Evans staggers onto a rancher’s land with a bullet in his back, he expects a quick death, not mercy. But Penny, the rancher’s daughter, offers him a chance at something he’s never had: a life beyond violence. However, the past doesn’t forgive. With the marshal closing in and an outlaw gang ready to burn the ranch to the ground, Quirt must decide what kind of man he’ll be when the world demands blood.

It’s already been a pretty good start to the year for Angel Studios, which released the surprisingly good Kevin James rom-com Solo Mio in February to the tune of $26M. Not bad for a small $4M production.

‘Mutiny’ Trailer: It’s A Jason Statham Action Movie, But On A Boat

Jason Statham, punching bad guys, shooting guns, and righting wrongs while aboard a big ship? No, Statham isn’t remaking Steven Seagal’s Under Siege, although if he were, would you be surprised? Nah, he’s starring in Mutiny, and it looks like every other Statham movie except with a lot more water.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m down for all of this. Mutiny finds Statham as, what else, a highly-trained ass-kicker type, framed for a crime and fighting to get some revenge while aboard a cargo ship. Sure, count me in.

The film is directed by Jean-François Richet, a French director with some interesting action flicks under his belt, such as the Assault On Precinct 13 remake, Mel Gibson’s Blood Father, Plane with Gerard Butler and Mike Colter, and the acclaimed crime film, Mesrine.

Joining Statham in the cast are Annabelle Wallis, Roland Møller, and Adrian Lester.

SYNOPSIS: In MUTINY, after witnessing his billionaire boss’s murder and being framed for the crime, Cole Reed (Jason Statham) boards a cargo ship on a one-man crusade to avenge his boss’ death only to discover an international conspiracy.

Lionsgate releases Mutiny in theaters on August 21st.

‘Ice Cream Man’ Teaser: Eli Roth Serves Up A Sweet Horror Treat This Summer

ICE CREAM MAN opens on August 7th

Eli Roth, the horror maestro known for Cabin Fever, Hostel, and Knock Knock, has made a couple of odd diversions lately. Remember fantasy film The House with the Clock in Its Walls? Or that atrocious video game movie Borderlands? Fortunately, Roth is back where he belongs and serving up a heaping sundae of slasher horror with Ice Cream Man, which Roth’s The Horror Section label is debuting the trailer today.

Produced, directed, and co-written by Roth alongside Noah Belson, the film takes place in the sunny, idyllic suburban town of Bayleen Bay. While all looks well, things get nasty when the kids suddenly turn violent thanks to an ice cream man’s sweet treats.

Orphan Black actor Ari Millen plays the grinning Ice Cream Man, who parents should definitely keep their kids away from. Also in the cast are Benjamin Byron Davis, Karen Cliche, Dylan Hawco, Sarah Abbott, Shiloh O’Reilly, Kiori Mirza Waldman, Charlie Zeltzer, and Charlie Storey.

Interestingly, the score features brand new music by Snoop Dogg alongside Brandon Roberts. Another rapper, the legendary Nas, is an exec-producer through The Horror Section’s strategic partnership with Mass Appeal.

Roth turned to directing Ice Cream Man when production was delayed on his sequel to Thanksgiving. Hopefully, now that this is done, he can return to that because I definitely want more of that holiday madness.

Ice Cream Man hits theaters on August 7th.

‘The Wizard Of The Kremlin’ Trailer: Jude Law And Paul Dano Star In Olivier Assayas’ Vladimir Putin Political Drama

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is one of the scariest dudes in the world. He’ll poison your drink, force you to take a long walk off a short pier, or swan dive off a tall building just for looking at him funny. But somehow he’s not as terrifying when played by Jude Law, as seen in the trailer for Olivier Assayas’ dark comedy satire, The Wizard of the Kremlin, which was nominated for a Golden Lion following its Venice premiere.

Based on the book by Giuliano da Empoli, The Wizard of the Kremlin stars Law as a young Putin during his rise to power after the fall of the Soviet Union. Paul Dano stars as the fictional Vadim Baranov, who becomes an influential figure standing by Putin’s side as a new government forms.

The impressive ensemble includes Alicia Vikander, Jeffrey Wright, Tom Sturridge, and Will Keen.

It’s been a quiet few years for Assayas, when it seemed like the filmmaker had a new project always right around the corner. He most recently directed Suspended Time in 2024 but it really flew under the radar compared to his earlier work in Clouds of Sils MariaPersonal ShopperSummer Hours, and Wasp Network.

SYNOPSIS: In the chaos of post-Soviet Russia, rising KGB officer Vladimir Putin (Jude Law) joins forces with master manipulator Vadim Baranov (Paul Dano) to reshape life behind the Iron Curtain, using violence and deception to change the world forever. Putin and Baranov’s reign of chaos begins with lies and corruption, and quickly escalates to assassinations, tyranny, and eventually all-out war.

Vertical will release The Wizard of the Kremlin in theaters on May 15th.

‘Billie Eilish-Hit Me Hard & Soft: The Tour (Live In 3D) Trailer: Eilish And James Cameron Promise To Blow People’s Minds

If anyone can top the chart-busting $261M success of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, it’s the combo of Billie Eilish and James Cameron. They have teamed up for Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard & Soft: The Tour (Live In 3D), an immersive concert experience hitting theaters in May.

Eilish and Cameron teaming up on, well, anything, is shocking news. Their individual success is extraordinary. They are at the absolute peak of their respective fields. So just imagine the heights they can achieve together. The duo is co-directing the concert movie, which charts Eilish’s latest blockbuster tour.

SYNOPSIS: Captured during her sold-out world tour, “Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard & Soft: The Tour (Live In 3D)” brings an innovative new concert experience to the big screen from one of the most celebrated and successful artists of her generation. Presented in immersive 3D, the film is directed by Academy Award winners James Cameron and Billie Eilish.

Eilish has already won a couple of Best Original Song Academy Awards for No Time to Die and Barbie. Cameron has won three Oscars for Titanic, and scored four nominations for the first two Avatar films.

Paramount Pictures will open Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard & Soft: The Tour (Live In 3D) on May 8th.

‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping’ Trailer: Haymitch Takes On The Infamous Second Quarter Quell

With literally decades’ worth of reapings, there is a wealth of Panem material for Lionsgate to mine, including characters with long backstories ready to be explored. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping takes us back to the early years of one of the most popular characters, Haymitch Abernathy, future mentor and winner of the infamous Second Quarter Quell.

After a teaser was released late last year, a full trailer for Sunrise on the Reaping has arrived, featuring Joseph Zada as a young Haymitch. He’s got big shoes to fill as Woody Harrelson played the alcoholic, prickly Haymitch in the four original movies.

The footage also offers our first looks at Elle Fanning as flamboyant stylist Effie Trinket, previously played by Elizabeth Banks; plus Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, originally played by Stanley Tucci; Ralph Fiennes as a middle-aged Coriolanus Snow, previously played by Donald Sutherland and Tom Blyth; and Maya Hawke as Wiress, originally played by Amanda Plummer; Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, who Philip Seymour Hoffman played before his tragic passing.

Also in the cast are McKenna Grace, Ben Wang, Glenn Close, Whitney Peak, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Billy Porter, Iris Apatow, Lili Taylor and more.

The film is directed by franchise vet, Francis Lawrence, from a Billy Ray script adapted from Suzanne Collins’ book.

Synopsis: THE HUNGER GAMES: SUNRISE ON THE REAPING revisits the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping opens on November 20th.

Box Office: ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ Crosses $600M Globally As ‘You, Me & Tuscany’ Opens With Just $8M

1. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie– $69M/$308.1M

Even with multiple new titles opening this week, the top 3 remained unchanged. Once again in the top spot is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie which fell just 47% and added another $69M for $308M domestically. That’s considerably less than its predecessor which had $92M in the second week. Worldwide, the Nintendo adaptation has $628M and should easily pass the $1B mark if this rate continues.

2. Project Hail Mary– $24.5M/$256.6M

3. The Drama– $8.7M/$30.8M

4. You, Me & Tuscany– $8M

Universal had the top new release of the week with the romantic comedy You, Me & Tuscany, which set a pair of gorgeous stars, Halle Bailey and Rege Jean-Page, in an equally gorgeous Italian setting. The result was disappointing, though, as couples either stayed in or went to see a holdover from last week, possibly The Drama which is another relationship film with greater star power (Robert Pattinson, Zendaya) and a catchy hook. I skipped it, too, so I don’t blame them.

5. Hoppers– $4.1M/$157.1M

6. BTS WORLD TOUR ‘ARIRANG’ in GOYANG: LIVE VIEWING– $2.4M

7. Faces of Death (review)- $1.7M

IFC and Shudder released Faces of Death, starring Barbie Ferreira and Dacre Montgomery in a revitalized homage to the cult favorite snuff film from 1978. With reviews from critics and audiences in the upper 60s on Rotten Tomatoes, the word of mouth has been pretty quiet, and it doesn’t help that it was filmed three years ago and met with multiple delays. Personally, I dug it and its commentary on our lust for both violence and attention. Perhaps it’ll do better over the long haul.

8. Exit 8 (review)- $1.4M

NEON found a minor success with Japanese video game adaptation Exit 8, a thriller about a man stuck in a seemingly endless maze of subway tunnels. Reviews have been through the roof, with 95% from critics and 82% from audiences.

9. A Great Awakening– $1.2M/$4.8M

10. Reminders of Him– $1M/$47.4M

I’m happy to offer DC area readers the chance to attend a free screening of Normal, the latest action flick starring Bob Odenkirk from the creators of John Wick and Nobody! The film is directed by Ben Wheatley (Free Fire).

SYNOPSIS: For Sheriff Ulysses (Odenkirk), his provisional posting to the quaint Midwestern American town of Normal was meant to be a welcome respite from both his marital woes and recent moral injuries in the line of duty. But when a botched bank robbery interrupts the municipality’s tranquil pace, a dark secret is inadvertently exposed, and Ulysses soon discovers that the town is anything but its namesake.

The screening takes place on Monday, April 13th at 7:00pm at Regal Majestic. If you’d like to attend, RSVP at the Google Docs form here! Please remember, all screenings are first come first served and you’ll need to arrive early to ensure seating. Enjoy the show!

Normal opens in theaters on April 17th.

‘X-Men’ Rumors: Odessa A’Zion Eyed For Rogue, Peter Claffey For Beast

As I said recently, the X-Men casting rumors are heating up. We already know Sadie Sink has a role, possibly as Jean Grey, and the MCU reboot is getting a rewrite Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear writer Joanna Calo.

The latest rumor comes from Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic, who says Marty Supreme breakout Odessa A’Zion is up for the X-Men role of the southern belle, Rogue. You may recall previous talk of Margaret Qualley being in line for the part. But A’Zion is arguably even hotter than Qualley around Hollywood right now, although if I’m honest neither actress seems like the right fit. Then again, neither did Anna Paquin, and she did a Hell of a job as Rogue in the Fox movies.

Rogue is one of the most popular X-Men ever, and it doesn’t matter what the medium is. You can NOT fuck this role up.

And then there’s Peter Claffey, fresh off his role as Sir Duncan, or “Dunk”, in HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He’s reportedly “in the mix” to play Hank “Beast” McCoy, one of the five original X-Men. Now this casting I like a lot. Again, neither Nicholas Hoult nor Kelsey Grammer made sense before, but both turned out to be pretty good.

X-Men is to be directed by Jake Schreier, who directed the excellent Robot & Frank, the less excellent Paper Towns, and Marvel’s solid Thunderbolts* movie that they tried to convince you was an Avengers movie. It doesn’t have a release date yet, but Marvel has three open slots in 2028 and it’s likely to land on one of those.

‘Perfect’: Netflix Drops Kerri Strug Biopic As Millie Bobby Brown Exits

Netflix has dropped the axe on Gia Coppola’s Olympics drama, Perfect. Why? Because star Millie Bobby Brown has exited the film due to “creative differences”, just a couple of months before production was to begin.

Perfect had been in the works for a while, and had been originally a project for Olivia Wilde to direct. Coppola boarded the project last September after Wilde dropped out. This would have been the follow-up to Coppola’s acclaimed drama, The Last Showgirl, which reinvigorated Pamela Anderson’s career. She was to reunite with Oscar-winning DP Autumn Durald Arkapaw for the fourth time.

There’s actually been quite a lot of movement on this film. Thomasin McKenzie was initially cast to play Olympic hero gymnast Kerri Strug, but was replaced by Brown late last year.

Perfect centers on Strug, who was part of the triumphant 1996 USA women’s gymnastics team dubbed the “Magnificent Seven.” Strug had one of the most unforgettable moments in Olympics history when she stuck the landing of a vault perfectly while nursing an injured ankle.

Something tells me this project isn’t completely dead, and may find a home elsewhere with a new lead actress, and possibly a different director. Strug’s story is too good not to tell on the big screen. [Deadline]
