‘Solo’: Alden Ehrenreich Confirms Deal For Multiple ‘Star Wars’ Films

It’s safe to say that Disney is always thinking big, especially with their major properties like Star Wars. Everything is seen as a potential franchise; even the cast of Rogue One signed multi-picture deals and we saw how that film ended. So it’s perhaps not a surprise to learn that Solo: A Star Wars Story is looked at in the same way. The only surprise is how the news got out.

In an interview with Esquire, star Alden Ehrenreich had a brain fart when asked about possible sequels, and the number of appearances in his contract…

“Three. I don’t know if that’s officially, uh, public. But—yeah.”

Would that it were so simple, young Ehrenreich.

So he goofed up, and he’ll probably get a testy email from some faceless suit at Lucasfilm. No big deal, because further movies will depend on how this one does, and I think the jury is very much out on that.

Ehrenreich also took time to talk about the behind-the-scenes drama that surrounded Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s time on set. The directors’ free-wheeling approach was rubbing some in Lucasfilm the wrong way, most notably Kathleen Kennedy who holds all the juice. If she’s not happy, it’s a big problem. But Ehrenreich says he and the other actors were mostly removed from all of that stuff. They just showed up and did their jobs…

“From the first screen test on, we played around with it a lot. We tried a lot of different things, rethinking behind the scenes. That was yielding a different movie than the other factions wanted. I knew what I was doing, but in terms of what that adds up to, you’re so in the dark as an actor. You don’t know what it’s shaping up to be, how they’re editing it, so it’s kind of impossible without having seen those things to know what the difference [of opinion] was, or exactly what created those differences…The actors are at the kids’ table, unless you’re also a producer of the movie. So you’re really kept out of all the backroom dynamics of what was going on.”

He also shoots down rumors the crew broke out into applause when Lord and Miller were fired, calling those reports “bullshit”, and sings the praises of Ron Howard who stepped up in their place…

“Everybody’s hackles are raised a bit, and Ron had this ability to come in and deal with morale and get everybody enthusiastic about, A, what we’d already shot, because I think his feeling was that a lot of what we’d already done was really good, and, B, the direction for the next piece of it. He knew how to navigate a tricky situation, and almost from the first or second day everybody pretty quickly recharged and got excited again about the movie.”

‘The Tale’ Trailer: Laura Dern Explores Sexual Abuse In HBO’s Drama

There weren’t many films that emerged from Sundance that screamed immediately as Oscar worthy, but if there was one it was The Tale. Instead it may have to settle for an Emmy, as HBO scooped up the disturbing drama that stars Laura Dern as a past victim of sexual abuse.

Directed by Jennifer Fox, the autobiographical story centers on a woman who begins to realize the intimate relationship she shared with her school track coach (played by a creepy Jason Ritter) was something else entirely.  What I remember hearing about it most was the unflinching depiction of the actual sex act, forcing the audience to be right there in that moment no matter how uncomfortable it may be.  Here’s the synopsis:

Jennifer has it all, with a loving boyfriend and a great career as a journalist and professor. But when her mother discovers a story – “The Tale” – that Jennifer wrote when she was 13, detailing a special relationship Jennifer had with two adult coaches, Jennifer returns to the Carolina horse farm where the events transpired to try to reconcile her version of events with the truth.

Also starring Elizabeth Debicki, Ellen Burstyn, Common, John Heard, Frances Conroy, and Isabella Amara, The Tale premieres May 26th on HBO.

‘211’ Trailer: Nicolas Cage Is In The Middle Of A Deadly Standoff

If Nicolas Cage really does only have three years of acting left, let’s hope he spends them in movies that look better than 211. I know, you haven’t heard of it, either. It seems to have sprung fully-formed from the ether where all previously unknown but completed Cage movies spring from.

Directed by York Shackleton (MTV’s Undressed) and based on a true story, Cage plays old school cop Mike Chandler escorting a civilian on a ride along, only to be caught in the middle of a deadly bank heist. They soon find themselves outnumbered and outgunned in one of the longest and bloodiest standoffs in police history.

It’s possible there’s more to this film than meets the eye, or at least is one of those “so awful it’s fun” movies that Cage specializes in. If not then it’s another disappointing blemish just as Cage seemed to be turning things around.

Also starring Cory Hardrict, Ori Pfeffer, Weston Cage, and Michael Rainey Jr., 211 hits theaters and VOD on June 8th.

‘Supergirl’ S3E15 Recap: “In Search of Lost Time”

It’s been a while since we dealt with the World Killer threat on Supergirl.  The season has been slowly building them up as we have seen Samantha slowly transition into one of the World Killers, strong enough to defeat Kara.  We are slowly seeing others, but last week Lana Luthor realized who her employee Samantha was, and had her locked in a containment field for further study.

Keeping it secret from everyone (including Kara and James), Lena’s placed Sam in a medically induced coma after suspecting her of being World Killer.  She theorizes that everytime Samantha blacks out, her cells mutate and give her Kryptonian powers as Reign.  Lana realizes that enough studying has been done, she needs to talk with Samantha.  When she wakes her up, all Samantha is worried about is her daughter.  Lena assures her that she’s fine, then she drops the truth bomb on her and what she’s been doing.  Naturally, Samantha doesn’t believe one word Lena is saying.  Lena won’t let her leave her cell until further tests are done.  That’s kind of a bad idea to do to someone with Reign’s powers.

As bad as Reign is, she’s not the big baddie tonight.  Instead, Kara and company face a completely different threat, one who they know and love.  Everyone is doing their favorite past time, drinking at the local alien-friendly bar and all seems well.  However, their fun is short-lived as a Kalanorian female starts a fight and proceeds to tear the place apart beating random strangers.  Kara intervenes as Supergirl, but the Kalanorian is even a match for her.  Once she finally takes her down, J’onn says that her aggressive behavior is due to her psychic abilities and astrological changes, but he knows something else is shaping.

Last week he discovered that his father Myr’nn’s mind is decaying through a process the Martians call “za-alet.”  It’s similar to Alzheimer’s disease as he’s now forgetful.  J’onn takes his father to the DEO to perform a Martian ritual that will move information from the decayed parts of his mind to the part of his mind that is healthy.  Unfortunately, it’s not having good results for others.

Kara, who was impressed with Mon-El’s use of a cape, asks him to train her how to use her cape for offensive capabilities.  As the two spar and he trains her how to use her cape, her aggression starts to come forward.  The same goes for Winn and another technician at the DEO.  Alex trying to break them up also gets angry and physical with the two of them.  All this pent-up aggression going on is due to Myr’nn trying to cleanse his mind.  Turns out as he’s trying to cleanse his mind, the anger and fear of possibly losing his thoughts and memories are bleeding over to everyone in the DEO, both human and alien.  The only people not affected are J’onn and Mon-El (who thanks to 31st Century technology is immune from psychic attacks).  Everyone else though starts tearing each other apart.  Kara even says some unfortunate truths to Mon-El, about how he was such a jerk to her.  Only when J’onn tells his delirious father that he needs help and uses a device to dampen his psychic powers does everything die down.  A remorseful Myr’nn’s apologizes to the DEO and Kara takes the first step to hug him.

Elsewhere, Samantha wakes up to her cell trashed.  Lena Luthor shows her a videotape of her acting as Reign.  On the videotape, Luthor taunts Samantha, and Reign comes out.  Faced with video evidence, Samantha breaks down, knowing that she’s responsible for so many deaths.  Lena promises to help her.  Meanwhile, Mon-El and Kara go flying and notice that the birds are dropping out of the sky.  This means the next World Killer Pestilence is coming.

Punch Drunk DVDs: ‘Paddington 2’, ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’, ‘Hostiles’, And More!

NEW THIS WEEK

This acclaimed heart-warming family adventure follows the
loveable little bear as he tries to find the perfect gift for his beloved aunt’s
100th birthday. Unfortunately for Paddington, the gift he finds is
qwuickly stolen and an adventure to get it back begins!

We Said: “Everybody has a
heart of gold when Paddington is around.
His generosity and caring nature are infectious, and so is Paddington
2
for anyone looking to start their year feeling a little better about
the world..” Rating: 4 out of 5

The final chapter of the Maze Runner trilogy sees Thomas (Dylan
O’Brien) lead some escaped Gladers on their final and most dangerous mission
yet: to save their captured friends from the infamous Last City, a villainous
labyrinth  that may turn out to be the
deadliest maze of all.

We Said: “There
are plenty of surprises, including the return of a major character thought long
dead, and an ending that is satisfying but leaves you wondering if there are
more stories left to tell. If only Ball could have found a way to trim down
that unforgiveable 142-minute runtime, I think more would be willing to run the
Maze once again, perhaps adapting the other two novels in James Dashner’s
series.” Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Set in 1892, this acclaimed drama follows Army Captain Blocker
(Christian Bale) as he is forced to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes
Studi) and his family back to their tribal land. On their journey they
encounter a young widow (Rosamund Pike) who lost her family on the plains. Together,
the group must set aside their prejudices and push through the harsh landscape
of the west to surive.

We Said: Hostiles
is as poetic as it is ferocious, and entertains while being thought-provoking.
The conversations it sparks may not be exactly what Cooper hoped for, but if it
gets people talking then has to be considered a victory.” Rating: 3 out of 5

‘Jumanji 3’ Sets Christmas 2019 Date Against ‘Star Wars: Episode 9’

After scoring an unexpected $950M with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Sony is getting ballsy with the previously announced sequel. They’ve now confirmed Jumanji 3 for Christmas Day 2019, which puts it in direct competition with Star Wars: Episode IX which opens just a few days earlier, and the big screen adaptation of Broadway hit, Wicked.

The announcement was made during the Sony presentation and CinemaCon, where it was also revealed that Dwayne Johnson will return for Jumanji‘s sequel. Nothing on co-stars Kevin Hart, Jack Black, or Karen Gillan, however.

Jumanji 3 already has returning writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner working on the script.

Joss Whedon Opens Up About His ‘Batgirl’ Departure, Teases New Project

When Joss Whedon was hired to do a Batgirl movie for Warner Bros. it was seen as a big step for the struggling DCEU. Here was the architect behind both of Marvel’s Avengers movies coming aboard to do a film that would hopefully follow in the successful footsteps of Wonder Woman. But after months without hearing much on it, Whedon would drop out claiming to not really have a Batgirl story to tell.

Variety caught up with him at last night’s Avengers: Infinity War premiere and he opened up about the reason for his departure. Sounds like he actually did have a story, but the landscape now is a lot different than it was just a few months ago…

“It had been a year since I first pitched the story. A lot happened in that year and I felt that some of the elements might not work as well and the story kind of just crumbled in my hands. There were elements that I just hadn’t mastered and after a long time, I felt like I wasn’t going to. So, I told people that I didn’t have an idea, which isn’t exactly true. I had an idea and it just didn’t fit into the space that was left for it. It was a little heartbreaking because I was so excited about it but I’m currently working on something of my own and there’s nothing more exciting to me than that.”

So reading between the lines it may be that Whedon got fidgety about releasing his story at the height of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movement. Warner Bros. waited a little while before hiring Christina Hodson to write a new script. There’s still no director attached and it will probably be a while before we hear of one. The Batgirl character will debut first in Birds of Prey alongside Harley Quinn, which Hodson is also writing.

Whedon mentions a different project that sounds like it will be separate from DC Films. Hopefully it’ll give him a chance to create a new badass female character without fear of criticism. I’m not sure the current climate will allow him to do it with a known property.

‘Woman Walks Ahead’ Trailer: Jessica Chastain Joins Sitting Bull’s Revolution

Hollywood has always had a fascination with re-examining America’s relationship to Native Americans. From Dances with Wolves to last year’s Hostiles, it remains particularly fertile dramatic ground, and it looks like we’ll be able to say the same about Woman Walks Ahead, which stars Jessica Chastain as real-life painter/activist Caroline Weldon, who became central in the conflict between the Lakota Sioux people and the U.S. government.

Directed by Susanna White (Our Kind of Traitor) and co-starring Oscar winner Sam Rockwell and Michael Greyeyes as Sitting Bull, the film centers on Weldon, a Brooklyn portrait painter looked down upon by her peers. After her divorce she became interested in the plight of Native Americans, and set out to Dakota Territory to paint Sioux leader Sitting Bull, becoming his secretary and confidante in the process. Weldon was publicly smeared by government agents for her staunch defense of Native Americans, making her hated by other whites and ruined in the press.

Also starring Ciaran Hinds, Bill Camp, and Michael Nouri, Woman Walks Ahead opens June 29th but will have an exclusive DirecTV run beginning May 31st.

Marvel May Have Cooled On An All-Female Teamup Movie

Marvel may have cooled on the idea of an all-female teamup movie. Or perhaps they were never really that into it at all? You can tell when an opinion around a project has solidified by the uniformity of the statements coming out about it, and in this case we have Tessa Thompson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Karen Gillan basically all saying the same thing about the film, which is that it was blown up to be more than it actually was.

First there’s Thompson, who played the popular Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok. Speaking with Observer, she blames the media for making too much out of the superheroine film…

“I don’t know. That was kind of an offhand thing, and then the press really ran with it. The extent to which the press ran with it is also an expression of what ripe a time it is for something like that. That people are hungry for it, that people are interested in it.

I think, regardless, Marvel is making their Black Widow movie and they are doing Captain Marvel and the female characters in the big team-up movies tend to be, at least for me, some of the strongest elements.”

Variety caught up with Gillan and Olsen at last night’s world premiere of Avengers: Infinity War, and their mood on the female Marvel flick was similarly downbeat. Gillan, who plays Nebula in both Guardians of the Galaxy flicks and Infinity War, calls the project a casual idea. Meanwhile Olsen, who reprises her role as Scarlet Witch, says the press blew it out of proportion…

So it may not be dead because it was never really alive in the first place? This kinda seemed like a situation in which Kevin Feige was backed into a corner and had to say the right thing. Until there’s something firm on this, expect him to give you the standard “It’s one of many projects we’re looking at” responses when asked if a female-led Marvel team movie is in the works.

‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Drops 14 New Character Posters

Because Disney needs you to remember they have other things going on besides Avengers: Infinity War, they’ve released 14 character posters for Solo: A Star Wars Story. They come in two different styles, and put some shine on supporting players like Thandie Newton as Val, Jon Favreau’s Rio, and Paul Bettany as Dryden Voss.
