Cate Blanchett To Play Lilith In Eli Roth’s ‘Borderlands’ Movie

And we thought it was strange when Cate Blanchett agreed to play a villain in Thor: Ragnarok. That’s nothing compared to the latest role she’s signed on for: Eli Roth’s Borderlands movie, based on the violent first-person shooter video games.

Variety reports the Oscar-winning Cate Blanchett is in talks to play Lilith in Eli Roth and Lionsgate’s Borderlands movie. Lilith is one of the core playable characters, a Siren with cosmic and spectral abilities. The game is set on the planet Pandora in a distant future, where mega corporations send treasure hunters to raid alien Vaults. To do it they’ll need to fight the planet’s native wildlife and deadly bandit population. The best-selling franchise has spawned three sequels, the latest in 2019.

Borderlands has no release date at this point. The script is by Craig Mazin, who won a pair of Emmys for HBO’s Cherynobyl miniseries. He’s also working on another video game adaptation, The Last of Us, also for HBO.

Blanchett can be seen right now leading Hulu’s excellent miniseries, Mrs. America.

Sylvester Stallone Says Rocky Might Be Done With ‘Creed’, But He’s Not Done With ‘Rocky’

The conclusion of Creed 2 really appeared to be the final sendoff for Rocky Balboa. He had reconciled with his son, and seen Adonis Creed begin the process of becoming his own man with a child to care for. And as far as that particular franchise goes, it might be true. However, Stallone isn’t quite done with Rocky just yet.

Once again speaking with his fans over Instagram, Stallone talked about Creed 2 being the end for Rocky as the franchise heads into a new sequel…

“Well, I believe in the film [Creed II], that’s possible, yes.

That doesn’t mean Stallone is done with Rocky Balboa, though, and teased some story ideas for the champion boxer’s future…

“I never say no to Rocky, because I have a couple of ideas”, he said, adding “they don’t really involve the ring as much as they should. I’m not so confident that will be exciting enough for the audience. But who knows?”.

Stallone has talked about doing a seventh Rocky movie before, with the next one possibly introducing a street fighter for him to mentor, this one an undocumented immigrant. The immigrant story is one Stallone has been fascinated with, as seen with Rambo: Last Blood.

Creed 3 has Zack Baylin (King Richard) aboard as screenwriter, but it’s unclear who will be behind the camera.

A Story That Begged To Be Told, Check Out The Trailer For ‘Inmate #1: The Rise of Danny Trejo’

Rise of Danny Trejo
Rise of Danny Trejo

Inmate #1: The Rise of Danny Trejo the Danny Trejo documentary we all know we needed and wanted. It’s no secret that we’re big fans of Danny Trejo around here at the PDC, after all it’s due to his kind and giving nature that we got our first big break. He took time out of his busy day to talk to a couple of no-name (at the time, we’re big deals now) movie geeks for their website and even dropped some exclusive news for us. That’s a reason he’ll always have a special place for us but to be honest the guy is a favorite to every genre fan there is. He’s in everything and has played perfect the badass for three decades, and he’s done so with the same swagger every time that he first brought to the public eye as Navajas in Desperado. While that’s enough to make someone a fan favorite those still waters of his run especially deep. Trejo started life on the wrong side of the tracks and ended up in prison. When he got out he turned his life around and has been doing the good guy thing ever since. Now, that is an EXTREME over-simplification of a story that, when told right, is the stuff of Oscar winning biopics. While the fictionalized version is probably a decade or so from being made we thankfully have a new documentary that looks to dig deep into the story of the most interesting man in Hollywood. Check out the trailer below, and for our coverage on all things Trejo click here!

‘Extraction’ Sequel Is On At Netflix, Story Could Go “Forward Or Backward In Time”

Well, that didn’t take long. Netflix has been touting the record-breaking viewership of Extraction, the action flick led by Chris Hemsworth, the Russo Brothers, and director Sam Hargrave. A sequel seemed obvious, and the filmmakers have already been teasing the possible return of Tyler Rake. Well, according to Deadline it’s definitely happening.

Netflix is reportedly bringing writer/producer Joe Russo back to pen Extraction 2, with the expectation that Hemsworth and Hargrave will join him…

“The deal is closed for me to write ‘Extraction 2,’ and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be,” Russo said. “We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.”

Russo continued, “There was always a simple drive to the story, a balletic execution of action where you take a damaged character who made an egregious mistake in the past and has a shot at redemption which might be fatal. What was key is that we needed a muscular action director like Sam to be the main creative force in the execution of the action.”

“Simple” may be part of Extraction‘s charm. The film stars Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a mercenary with a troubled past who takes on a dangerous mission to save a Bangladeshi crimelord’s son. The movie is about as straight-forward as it gets, and offers Hemsworth a chance to play action hero in his own franchise outside of Marvel.

Joe Russo wrote the script but he also produced with his brother, Anthony Russo, the duo famous for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Hargrave made his directorial debut on Extraction, and as the longtime stunt coordinator for the Russos, it was a given that he’d return.

That Russo won’t commit to a sequel or prequel is a nod to Extraction‘s cloudy final shot that leaves more questions than answers. While I expect Russo and Hargrave will look to expand the Tyler Rake story significantly, they’ll probably also want to remember why the movie did so well in the first place.

‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2 Adds ‘Ant-Man’ Director Peyton Reed, Robert Rodriguez Confirmed

While nothing is going to overshadow the Star Wars Day news of Taika Waititi directing a new Star Wars movie, there were a couple of big reveals for The Mandalorian, as well. Ant-Man and, more importantly, Bring It On director Peyton Reed will be at the helm of a second-season episode of the Disney+ series.

Not only that, but Robert Rodriguez confirmed rumors from a few months ago by posting an image of himself with a certain green infant phenomenon called Baby Yoda…

We shouldn’t see Reed as a surprising choice given his connection to Disney through a pair of Ant-Man movies, but I’ll be honest he wasn’t somebody that immediately came to mind for Star Wars. Perhaps because the Ant-Man movies, as much fun as they are, don’t showcase a signature directorial style. The other directors for The Mandalorian all have very obvious influences that show themselves on screen.

That said, Reed is a very good filmmaker, and his announcement tweet is interesting because of the battered state of Mando’s helmet…

Rodriguez, on the other hand, has shown he can do just about anything he wants. The Western style he brought to films El Mariachi and Desperado will blend perfectly with The Mandalorian. He’s also got blockbuster experience through Sin City and Alita: Battle Angel. His episode, which he’s apparently already shot, is going to be great to watch.

‘Space Force’ Trailer: Steve Carell Is The Man To Lead America Back To The Moon

Space Force. When you hear the occupant of the White House talk about it, it sounds ridiculous and like something that will go down as another thing he came up with that makes his administration look foolish. So why not just lean into it and laugh at the entire concept with a TV series led by Steve Carell?  Space Force is here.

Netflix has dropped a teaser for Space Force, which reunites Carell with The Office creator Greg Daniels.

“It is a complete shit show” says one employee about 4-star general Mark R. Naird (Carell), the guy thrown into the deep end of leading the newest military branch, with a goal of getting boots on the moon by 2024. The tone of the series is pretty weird, though, and you would almost expect a laugh track to play after his statement. This is definitely not the same tone as The Office, but also not completely separate. We really need to see more of the show to get a handle on what Daniels and Carell are doing.

Also in the cast are John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Lisa Kudrow, Jimmy O. Yang, Noah Emmerich, Alex Sparrow, Don Lake, Jessica St. Clair, Diana Silvers, Fred Willard, and Tawny Newsome.

The 10-episode first season of Space Force hits Netflix on May 29th.

SYNOPSIS: A decorated pilot with dreams of running the Air Force, four-star general Mark R. Naird (Steve Carell) is thrown for a loop when he finds himself tapped to lead the newly formed sixth branch of the US Armed Forces: Space Force. Skeptical but dedicated, Mark uproots his family and moves to a remote base in Colorado where he and a colorful team of scientists and “Spacemen” are tasked by the White House with getting American boots on the moon (again) in a hurry and achieving total space dominance.

Review: ‘Blue Story’

Rapper/Director “Rapman” Delivers A Tour De Force About Friends Who Fall Out Due to A Gang War

Blue

Thanks to Netflix’s revival of the UK’s Channel 4 classic Top Boy, we here stateside got to learn about what goes on across the pond in the black communities over in London. Once you get past the uniquely different slang terms, it’s a strong drama series and can pique interest in what else the UK can offer in that territory.

Enter director Andrew Onwubolu, also known as “Rapman.” Rapman created the successful YouTube series Shiro’s Story about London gangs told through the medium of rap/hip hop, which not only amasses almost 20 million views across 3 episodes released, but landed Rapman a management deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation management group to develop TV, films, and music But even more: a deal with BBC Films and Paramount Pictures to expand the themes from Shiro’s Story into a feature-length film, Blue Story.

BlueBlue Story centers on Timmy (Stephen Odubola) and Marco (Micheal Ward from Top Boy and fresh off his new 2020 BAFTA “Rising Star” Award) are childhood friends who have been neck and neck since before they can remember. They just happen to not really live in the same neighborhood, which has now been ravaged by beefs between the two neighborhood gangs (featuring the real-life gangs the “Peckham Boys” and the “Ghetto Boys”, who had a war in real life as well) in a “postal” war. Although Timmy is not in a gang, Marco’s older brother is the leader of one of the gangs. Both friends try and remain neutral to the different neighborhood’s beefs, but soon it gets too big which causes them to have to pick sides, and even then, they resist. But soon enough Timmy falls for fellow classmate Leah (Karla-Simone Spence) and a new girlfriend can break up a friendship quicker than a gang war could. A series of misunderstandings follow which escalate things beyond their control, and soon enough has Timmy and Marco on opposite ends as leaders of their respective gangs. They really don’t care about the turf war, it’s just their hatred for each other has boiled to the brim, everything (and everyone) else be damned.

BlueWhat makes Blue Story really gripping is the acting, as well as the filmmaking and storytelling style delivered. Unlike most “hood movies,” which tend to glorify and sensationalize the violence, Blue Story operates more like a tragic story between two inseparable people as they turn from best friends to worst enemies. In fact, each moment that has violence has drastic consequences as the film continues, showcasing the problematic cost of this lifestyle. When there are deaths, they hit hard because of not only the authenticity of what’s happening, but because we have come to really love the characters it happens to. There are moments of the film depicting the gang war that is intercut with news footage of real gang fights going on in London, complete with grainy CCTV footage. Speaking of the violence, it’s worth noting that because of the UK’s rather restrictive gun laws, many gangs don’t opt for a gun, but instead, bats, knives, and machetes are the weapons of choice. Even though there are some guns in Blue Story, the bullet count is considerably lower than if this film took place stateside. It’s also very interesting how the gangs use social media as a propaganda tool against each other as well.

BlueMichael Ward already stole the show in Top Boy last year but Stephen Odubola also shines. Both are currently heavy hitters in the UK drama scene, but you can expect them to blow up stateside very soon. Eastenders alum Khali Best also shines as one of the more vocal gang members in Blue Story. Many actors who were in Top Boy also show up as different characters as well. Newcomer Karla-Simone Spence is great as Leah, who has great moments when talking about Game of Thrones as well as talking about the fact that anyone from Peckham can do whatever they want in life, citing actor that John Boyega is from their neighborhood, and is in Star Wars, the biggest movie in the world.

BlueYou can’t talk about the storytelling style without discussing Rapman’s rap interludes that take place throughout Blue Story as he breaks the fourth wall and raps the story to the audience. For one, the rapping he does is great and works very well to make Blue Story to operate almost like a musical. In fact, why hasn’t there been a hip-hop musical in the US by now? For God’s sake, Lin Manuel Miranda can make a hip hop-play about Alexander Hamilton, there should be a hip-hop musical by now. Hell, even Rachael Bloom made Crazy Ex-Girlfriend with a minimum of 3 musical songs on a weekly basis, a few even had hip-hop songs, so the US needs to step their musical game up, especially for hip-hop. And Rapman isn’t doing that mumble mess, so as an 80s-2010s hip hop head, I can appreciate the craft of telling a great story through rhyme and skills. Sure, it has British slang in the rhymes, so get used to “mad ting” and other stuff you might be unfamiliar with, but it still is awesome. While he does more rapping vs dialogue in Shiro’s Story, (as they are shorter in a feature-length film), the skill, storytelling, and just all-around greatness of his artistic style still remain. Simply put, what Rapman has done from a creative standpoint to incorporate hip-hop is something that works perfectly, and I’m sure will be replicated stateside soon enough.

Blue Story tells a fascinating tale of a Romeo and Juliet-styled bromance that has the same type of disaster that could be avoided if people just tried to simply talk and make better choices. Blue Story could get some possible comparisons to Boyz n the Hood: Both films were the inaugural movies by a promising director (Rapman and John Singleton), both films tell of the urban plight of gangs, both employ rappers (and in this case, have actual rapping as part of the dialogue) into the films as well, and both films talk about manhood (fragile masculinity), emotion, tribalism, and violence and how they all intersect dangerously to repeat a never-ending cycle. Whether it’s across the pond, or stateside, this is an issue that needs to continuously addressed by the powers that be.

Blue Story is currently available for VOD and various streaming services.

‘The New Mutants’ Digital Release Seems Likely, Amazon Mistakenly Opens Up Preorders

We may finally be getting an answer about The New Mutants’ future since Disney pulled it from the schedule. How do we know? Because yesterday the movie was made available for preorder on Amazon Prime. At least for a little while.

The Amazon listing had The New Mutants available for $25.99 in the U.S., but failed to have a release date. That price might seem high, but is likely for premium purchase with a lower price point for rentals. The ad is still up and you can find it here, but has now been edited to say “Our agreements with the content provider don’t allow purchases of this title at this time.” The question is what’s up with the people who already bought it? Hope they got a refund.

The content provider would be Disney/Fox, of course. It appears that Amazon simply put the cart before the horse, but they must’ve had reason to think it was okay to go up.

Nobody would be surprised if The New Mutants did go direct to VOD, but which is why the wait for an official announcement is so strange. I think a calculation by Disney has been made that, regardless of the bad buzz surrounding it, people are really eager to see this film and will pay for it. That’s why you’re not going to see it arrive on Disney+ exclusively, but on other digital streaming outlets.

Disney+ To Decode The ‘Fury Files’ On Marvel’s Greatest Heroes & Villains

Also The Second Season Of Anime Series 'Marvel's Future Avengers'

Disney+ is still lacking in new Marvel Cinematic Universe content, and with the live-action shows in flux because of the pandemic, they’ve decided to open up the Fury Files. Coming to the streamer on May 15th, the series opens up the top secret files of the ultimate spy, Nick Fury, for a look at the intel he’s got on all of Marvel’s superheroes and villains.

Fury Files will be presented in a mix of animation and motion comic art. Expect some of that animation to come from prior shows X-Men: The Animated Series, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and others.

This isn’t exactly a new concept, as Fury Files originally aired in 1-3 minute segments years ago on Disney XD during their Marvel Animation block. At the time, Fury was voiced by actor Chi McBride. It’s unclear if that will stay the case, or if Samuel L. Jackson will take over. Marvel’s announcement presents this is a brand new show, so perhaps they will do things differently than before. You can watch an older episode below.

Also coming to Disney+ on May 22nd is the second season of Marvel’s Future Avengers. The Japanese anime series follows “Makoto, a young boy who developed superpowers from a Hydra genetic engineering experiment, and his friends Adi and Chloe as they train under Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as apprentices.” [Marvel.com]

Tom Cruise’s Next Mission? Shooting A Movie In Outer Space With Elon Musk’s SpaceX

We’ve often joked that Fast & Furious should go ahead and send its characters into outer space. Well, Tom Cruise is going to beat them to it, only he’s going to the stars for real to shoot a film, and with the help of Elon Musk.

Deadline reports Tom Cruise is joining up with Elon Musk’s SpaceX for an action movie that will be shot in outer space, the first ever to do so. Unfortunately, it isn’t a Mission: Impossible film which seems like a missed opportunity. NASA will be on the help-out with this one, and the only other thing we know is they are still in the very “early stages” of development with no studios attached.

Um, I think there might be a bidding war for this one.

Cruise and Musk are almost too perfect of a pairing. I think they’re both pretty easy to mock for their various ambitions, but that’s also why this movie could be incredible. Musk having the idea to make a movie in space isn’t that surprising, and Cruise is literally the only actor who seems like the right guy to join him. Both are always willing to push boundaries and in the case of Cruise to put himself physically in harm’s way to achieve greatness.

On the other hand, I could see Musk and Cruise butting heads if this doesn’t go as either hopes it to. Filming in outer space is going to come with challenges nobody can predict, which makes me wonder if Cruise will turn to one of his trusted partners, such a Christopher McQuarrie, Doug Liman, or Joseph Kosinski, to direct it.
