Review: ‘The Sunlit Night’

Jenny Slate Sinks At The Top Of The World

*NOTE* This is an edited review from the Sundance Film Festival*

I’ll say this for director David Wnendt; he knows how to make an impression. He both repulsed and charmed Sundance audiences in 2014 with his gross-out rom-com Wetlands which introduced me and many others to the exquisite talents of actress Carla Juri. Wnendt’s starry followup, The Sunlit Night, offers a similarly strange romantic entanglement for another Park City favorite, Jenny Slate, but the talented actress can barely make heads or tails of an underwritten character and a love story as dim as the Norwegian sun is beaming.

As Frances, a failed New York painter dealing with a sudden breakup, her sister’s impending nuptials, and her parents’ separation. She needs to get away, and having turned down a prestigious art internship due to her ex-beau’s influence, Frances goes scrambling back looking for anything that’s left. Her only option is an internship in Norway with a gruff painter trying to finish a public presentation of a…yellow barn. Frances thinks she’s going somewhere glamorous, but instead, she ends up in a ramshackle town near the top of the world, populated by oddballs in Viking costumes for the most part.

The Vikings, who live in a community run by a dude from Cincinnati (Zach Galifianakis), are just part of the reason why Frances is distracted from her long days at work. Another is the presence of poor, melancholy Yasha (Alex Sharp), a Russian who has arrived from New York to give his deceased father the Viking funeral he always wanted.

Perhaps something got lost in the translation of Rebecca Dinerstein’s novel, but since the author doubles as screenwriter that’s unlikely. Perhaps the connection between Frances and Yasha, which is presented as so profound it needs hardly any words, was always meant to be so threadbare. Within moments of spotting him on the road, she’s ingratiated herself into his life, taking part in his father’s funeral and running off with him to the detriment of her work. It’s simply not enough to say their mutual fish-out-of-water status is what drove them together; the kind of bond they have still needed some emotional foundation. Slate and Sharp’s chemistry is nonexistent as a result, while individually they make the most of two bland characters. The same can’t be said for Galifianakis’ misplaced dufus role as the Viking “chief”, and the less said the better about Gillian Anderson as Yasha’s estranged mother, in a curious turn that is part Black Widow/part Rocky & Bullwinkle.

Even after what seems like a half-dozen endings the film keeps chugging along as if the filmmakers are hoping to find the inspiration that has been missing.  It’s easy to see why Frances would fall in love with the place, despite living in a cramped trailer tagged “Welcome to Hell” by the previous occupant. But our fascination with the mountainous views and sun-kissed landscapes only highlights what a missed opportunity The Sunlit Night is, failing to inspire even a little bit of passion. However, it does fuel a desire to plan a Norwegian vacation. Probably not the impression Wnendt hoped to make, but it’s not a total loss.

Alden Ehrenreich Hints At Future ‘Solo’ Projects

So what happens when Solo actor Alden Ehrenreich goes on tour for something totally outside the realm of Star Wars? Well, we get a lot of interviews about Star Wars, naturally, which is why there have been a flurry of reports regarding the possibility of him playing Han Solo again.

This time it’s Esquire who get a shot at asking him the same questions he’s been getting asked all week, about doing another Solo movie, and Ehrenreich says pretty much the same thing which is that it depends on the story…

“It depends on what it is. It depends on how it’s done. It depends if it feels innate to the story,” Ehrenreich said.

What makes this time different? Well, now Ehrenreich is admitting, albeit vaguely, that a new Solo sequel might be in the works.

“No, I don’t know anything about that. I mean, you know, I think our movie was kind of the last of the conventional-era ‘Star Wars’ movie release time. I’ve heard soooome stuff, but nothing concrete.”

Some people may scoff at the idea of Disney/Lucasfilm ever wanting to go back to the Solo well, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Maybe not in a traditional sequel sense, but a Disney+ series makes some degree of sense. They’re already on a prequel kick with Obi-Wan and Cassian Andor shows, and Han Solo would fit right in. They could also decide to ignore Han and follow one of the many other characters that appeared in the movie. I’d love a show that digs into the criminal underworld where Darth Maul, Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke) and other characters reside.  I guess The Mandalorian fills that niche a little bit, but there’s more that could be done.

Ehrenreich is on tour promoting the release of his new Peacock series, Brave New World, which is available now.

Sabrina Carpenter Teaches The Outcasts To ‘Work It’ In Netflix Dance Flick Produced By Alicia Keys

work it

Like SO many others before her Sabrina Carpenter is set on teaching the school outcasts how to get down in the new dance-off flick Work It from Netflix. Say what you will but Netflix has quickly filled that giant theatrical hole of mid-budget films that used to fill our calendars. Action movies, teen drama’s and rom-com’s, Netflix has them all on lock. The thing I love the most about this? They don’t feel the need to strive from the formula, sure the execution is different but it feels like what we are getting is more pure. Take Work It for example, read this official synopsis:

When Quinn Ackerman’s admission to the college of her dreams depends on her performance at a dance competition, she forms a ragtag group of dancers to take on the best squad in school…now she just needs to learn how to dance. Starring Sabrina Carpenter, Liza Koshy, Keiynan Lonsdale, Drew Ray Tanner, with Michelle Buteau and Jordan Fisher.

That movie has been made 20 times since the 80’s and that’s not counting sequels…BUT, like I said it’s all in the execution and that’s where these films have excelled. They’re not re-inventing the wheel so they have the time to make what they are delivering fun, and though I’m not the target demo for this film I have to admit….it looks like fun!

Check out the trailer below and look for Work It on Netflix August 7th, 2020

‘The Gray Man’: The Russos To Direct Chris Evans And Ryan Gosling In Netflix’s Most Expensive Film Yet

Chris Evans is denying reports of a return for AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY

Have you been paying attention to film Twitter all this time? Then you know it’s a thirsty thirsty beast constantly needing to be quenched. A movie featuring Chris “America’s Ass” Evans going toe-to-toe with Ryan Gosling is…well, it’ll be like an ice cold beer on a hot summer night. And Netflix knows this, which is why they’re throwing down major dollars for The Gray Man.

Deadline reports that Netflix is teaming up with Marvel vets the Russo Brothers, who will direct Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling in The Gray Man.  The script will be penned by Joe Russo (who recently wrote Extraction for Netflix), with even more Marvel alums, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, doing a polish.

While that collection of talent, all of whom are responsible for the chart-topping success of Avengers: Endgame, is damn impressive, here comes the most shocking part. Netflix is plunking down an astronomical $200M on the budget, making this the most expensive movie for them yet. So for that amount of cashola, what are they buying?

The film is based on Mark Greaney’s “Court Gentry” book series, and stars Gosling as the titular ex-CIA operative-turned-assassin as he’s hunted down by colleague LLoyd Hanson (Evans).

If all of this sounds familiar, well, it should. James Gray was planning to adapt it a few years ago with Brad Pitt in the lead. The Russos took it over way back in 2015, and at one point Charlize Theron eyed the lead role.  It does not appear that she is still involved.

The hope is for a January start date, but who knows at this point? Here is what the Russos had to say about today’s news:

“The movie is a real mano a mano between those two great actors, who represent two different versions of the CIA, in what it can be, and what it can do,” Anthony Russo said. “For those who were fans of ‘Captain America: Winter Soldier,’ this is us moving into that territory in more of a real-world setting. That’s what this movie really means for us.”

Joe Russo added, “The intention is for it to be competitive with any theatrical and the ability to do it with Gosling and Evans is a dream for us. The idea is to create a franchise and build out a whole universe, with Ryan at the center of it. We have all committed to the first movie and that’s got to be great to get us to the second movie. These are master assassins and Gosling’s character gets burned by the CIA and Evans’ character has to hunt him down. We have a great working relationship with Netflix, and we go back almost 20 years with Scott Stuber. We formed AGBO to be an agnostic storytelling company, where we figure out the best platform. We think Netflix is the perfect place for this film.”

Rumor: ‘No Time To Die’ Release Date Could Shift To Summer 2021

With everyone focused on the fates of Tenet and Mulan, it’s easy to forget that No Time to Die is also coming up pretty soon. The latest James Bond film was the first signal that COVID-19 was going to disrupt Hollywood in a major way, moving its release from April to November 2020. With the situation for theaters still very much up in the air, it’s possible the film could be on the verge of another shift, this time into 2021.

This rumor comes from the 007 fansite MI6, which occasionally comes through on Bond info. They say MGM and Universal are actively considering a move into summer 2021 for No Time to Die, due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and its impact on theaters globally.

With an estimated $30M having been lost already on promos for the failed April release, some heavy thought is being put into the next 90-day marketing campaign which would be starting soon for the November release.

Universal already has Fast & Furious 9 set to open in April 2021 after being delayed for a year because of COVID-19, while Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom arrives next June. However, the latter’s production was delayed due to the shutdown, and is only just ramping back up again. The dinosaur flick could see its release date moved, which would open up a slot for No Time to Die to fill.

Whether this story proves true or not, the situation with No Time to Die is coming to a head soon so expect MGM/Universal to issue a statement.

‘Hard Kill’ Trailer: Bruce Willis Takes Backseat To Jesse Metcalfe And Eva Marie In His Latest Action Flick

Somehow, someway, that guy from Desperate Housewives and John Tucker Must Die became a sorta action star? Jesse Metcalfe gets top billing over Bruce Willis in the upcoming flick, Hard Kill, which just goes to show how far the Die Hard star has fallen.

Also appearing in Hard Kill? Natalie Eva Marie. That name probably means less than nothing for 99% of you, but she is the ex-WWE superstar Eva Marie. In order to get across just how bad of an actress she was, she wasn’t even good enough to make it in WWE even though she looks like a million bucks. They could barely stand to use her on Total Divas. That said, she does seem right at home as member of an elite military unit out to stop a terrorist who has kidnapped a billionaire CEO’s daughter in order to get his hands on technology that could change the world.

The film is directed by Matt Eskandari, a Willis favorite who worked with him on Trauma Center and Survive the Night, the latter having just opened a couple of months ago. These dudes work fast.

Hard Kill hits theaters and VOD on August 28th.

‘Chucky’ Teaser: So Much Evil The ‘Child’s Play’ Series Will Air On Two Networks

Don’t be confused. Yes, the Child’s Play franchise had a reboot only a year ago, but that was without the franchise creator Don Mancini for the first time. He went off to do his own thing, branching the killer doll’s story into a TV series, titled Chucky, that we now know will arrive in 2021. Not only that, but there’s so much murderous doll action that it will have not one, but two network homes.

A new teaser for Chucky reveals the series will air on USA Network and SYFY. Mancini’s show continues the original Child’s Play timeline, and brings back Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky, and Jennifer Tilly who came aboard with 1998’s Bride of Chucky as Tiffany Valentine.

SYNOPSIS: After a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies — and allies — from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.

It’s still inexplicable to me that of all things it’s Child’s Play which is big enough to sustain a reboot and a TV series at the same time. Well…I guess we’ll see if that turns out to be the case, right? The reboot did okay, making $45M on a budget of $10M, but has sparked little interest in a sequel. Mancini has his hands full if Chucky is going to be a hit on the small screen, and I’m curious to see if he can pull it off.

‘Constantine’ Director Says He And Keanu Reeves Still Want A Sequel, But WB Has “Other Plans”

In a recent rumor-killing news dump, the subject of supernatural DC Comics character Constantine came up. For years there have been talks of a sequel to the cult favorite film that starred Keanu Reeves as the chain-smoking mystic, but recently those rumors have really kicked up. But the most recent update was that no movie was in the works for him at Warner Bros., which is interesting in light of recent comments by Francis Lawrence, who directed the previous Constantine film.

Speaking with Slashfilm, Lawrence made it clear that he’s still down to do a Constantine sequel, and that Reeves and producer Akiva Goldsman are into it, as well. But he says Warner Bros. has “other plans” for John Constantine that do not involve them…

“I think we all wanted to do it. It was successful enough. We wanted to make a responsible, more R-rated movie. By responsible, I mean we’d make a movie that wouldn’t cost quite as much as the original, which we thought was going to be PG-13. We worked on the sequel for a while. It was tricky to come up with where to take it. What I really liked about the first one was it was a really personal story, so I thought it’d be a mistake to get caught up in the supernatural gobblygook. The idea of a personal story was really interesting, and that was the hard thing to come across. We have been talking about it recently. It’s always stuck with all of us because we all love the movie, and especially realizing there’s a real cult following for this movie, it’d be fun to make. Keanu, Akiva, and I have actually talked about it. Unfortunately, I don’t even remember who has it, but with all these shared universes that exist now, with Constantine being a part of Vertigo, which is a part of DC, people have plans for these shared universes. You know, possibly different Constantines and things like that. Right now, we don’t have that character available to us for TV or movies, which is a bummer. We all investigated it, but I think it’s kind of crazy when you have Keanu, who would love to do another Constantine, and us wanting to do another Constantine, and people are like, “Uh, no, we got other plans.” We’ll see what happens.”

It’s possible Lawrence is referring to the Justice League Dark series for HBO Max which is being developed by JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot. Constantine is closely associated with the group, and would be its most visible member so any project about them would certainly include him. As Lawrence says, though, it’s a shame that everybody wants to do another movie and that WB simply isn’t interested.  The movie did well, earning $230M when it opened in 2005, and the character has since lived on in a short-lived TV series, which then saw him move over to the Arrowverse as part of Legends of Tomorrow.

‘The New Mutants’ Teaser Confirms Comic-Con @ Home Panel, But Where’s The Release Date?

This year’s Comic-Con @ Home has been pretty short on big announcements. Normally, I’m running down the daily schedule in anticipation of major panels, but there’s been little to strike up my excitement. Until now, that is, because 20th Century Studios have revealed The New Mutants will have a panel Thursday, July 23rd at 2pm PT with the entire cast included.

As part of this announcement, an awesome new teaser has dropped, as well. While less than a minute long, it shows off the movie’s horror elements as the team of young mutants are trapped inside of a deadly psychiatric facility. We also see the Demon Bear, and more of Illyana (Anya Taylor-Joy) traveling into the Hellish landscape known as Limbo.  The film also stars Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt and Henry Zaga.

The film was shot back in 2017 by writer/director Josh Boone, and the production issues ever since are well-known. Mostly, the hold-up has been that it was originally meant to be an X-Men movie for Fox, but when the company was sold to Disney it was left unmoored. While the August 28th release date has been pretty solid, it’s still unclear if that will hold. This teaser makes no mention of the release date at all, actually. I feel like there’s still a good chance it could end up on Disney+.

‘Shazam’ Spinoff ‘Black Adam’ Casts Noah Centineo As Atom Smasher

Fans of Netflix heartthrob Noah Centineo rejoice. Your boy is headed to the big leagues with his first big superhero film, starring alongside Dwayne Johnson in Shazam spinoff Black Adam.

According to THR, Centineo will play Atom Smasher in Black Adam, the spinoff movie that Dwayne Johnson has been talking up even before there was a Shazam. Atom Smasher, aka Albert Rothstein, is the godson of the Golden Age hero The Atom, and has the power to control his molecular structure, allowing for super-strength, growth, and a host of other abilities. He was previously played by Adam “Edge” Copeland in the second season of The Flash.

The character is most closely associated with the Justice Society of America, who are expected to be part of the movie. It’s looking increasingly likely that Black Adam will take place across multiple time periods, in the past and in the present.

Centineo won a legion of fans for his role in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and its sequel, plus Sierra Burgess is a Loser, and The Perfect Date. He then landed the role of He-Man in the delayed/shelved Masters of the Universe movie. A supporting part in the recent Charlie’s Angels film is his biggest brush with a project of this scope.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam opens December 22nd 2021.
