August 2026 Movie Preview: The Biggest Premieres Still To Come This Month

August may be well underway, but the summer movie season still has plenty left in the tank. The next few weeks are bringing an unusually varied group of theatrical releases, from mysterious science fiction and supernatural horror to Jason Statham action and a long-awaited Looney Tunes comeback. For moviegoers looking beyond the biggest early-summer blockbusters, the second half of the month could offer some of the season’s most interesting surprises.

Getting audiences to notice those releases has become almost as important as the movies themselves. Trailers, festival buzz, social media campaigns, entertainment coverage and broader digital promotion all compete for attention before opening weekend, while tools such as agency link building services form part of the wider online visibility ecosystem used across entertainment and other competitive industries. But once the lights go down, marketing can only do so much – the films still need to give audiences a reason to talk about them.

The End of Oak Street Brings Mystery Back to the Summer Schedule

One of the most intriguing releases arriving next is The End of Oak Street, which opens in theaters on August 14. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the filmmaker behind It Follows, the movie stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, with J.J. Abrams involved as a producer. Punch Drunk Critics has already highlighted the project several times as its campaign has gradually revealed more about the mysterious sci-fi film.

That slow-burn approach has helped the movie stand apart from a summer crowded with recognizable franchises. Rather than revealing every major plot beat months ahead of release, the campaign has leaned heavily on atmosphere, unusual imagery and the presence of a strong central cast. For audiences tired of trailers that seem to explain an entire movie before opening night, that restraint is refreshing.

It is also an interesting release for Mitchell, whose previous films have often taken familiar genre ideas and pushed them in unexpected directions. A large-scale August release gives him a considerably bigger platform, while Hathaway and McGregor provide the kind of star power that can bring a strange genre concept to viewers who might otherwise skip it. Whether the mystery itself pays off will determine whether The End of Oak Street becomes a late-summer talking point or simply another ambitious curiosity.

Horror Returns to The Further

A week later, Sony and Blumhouse return to one of modern horror’s most durable supernatural franchises with Insidious: Out of the Further. The sixth Insidious movie opens on August 21, with Lin Shaye once again returning as Elise Rainier. Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Sam Spruell are also part of the cast.

Continuing Insidious without simply repeating earlier chapters is a difficult assignment. The franchise has already explored different periods, families and corners of its supernatural mythology, while Elise has remained one of its most recognizable characters. Bringing her back to the center gives the sequel an immediate connection to the series’ history without requiring another direct continuation of the Lambert family’s story.

The timing also makes sense. Horror has become one of the few genres capable of breaking through at almost any point on the calendar, provided there is a strong hook and recognizable concept. Insidious already has both. For longtime fans, the bigger question is whether Out of the Further can make its supernatural world frightening again rather than simply familiar.

Jason Statham Takes His Next Fight to Sea

Opening on the same day is Mutiny, giving August 21 audiences a completely different option. Jason Statham stars as Cole Reed, a man who witnesses the murder of his billionaire boss and is framed for the crime. His attempt to uncover what happened eventually sends him aboard a cargo ship and into the middle of a larger international conspiracy. Annabelle Wallis, Roland Møller and Adrian Lester co-star.

There is something almost reassuring about a Jason Statham movie that understands exactly what viewers are expecting. Mutiny is not hiding its identity behind an overly complicated campaign: this is another vehicle built around Statham being pursued, fighting back and uncovering people considerably more dangerous than they first appear.

The cargo-ship setting could be what separates it from his other recent action movies. Confined environments naturally create opportunities for tighter fights, escapes and confrontations, while the conspiracy element gives the story room to expand beyond a straightforward revenge plot. Statham has built an impressive second career out of making this type of mid-budget action movie feel like an event, and Mutiny looks designed for exactly that audience.

Coyote vs. Acme Finally Reaches the Big Screen

Then there is the movie many viewers once thought they would not get to see at all. Coyote vs. Acme is scheduled to open theatrically on August 28, bringing Wile E. Coyote’s decades-long battle with unreliable Acme products into a live-action and animation hybrid. Will Forte, John Cena, Lana Condor, Luis Guzmán and Tone Bell are among the cast, with Dave Green directing.

The premise is wonderfully simple: after years of disastrous gadgets, Wile E. Coyote decides to take Acme Corporation to court. It is the sort of idea that fits the Looney Tunes character perfectly while giving filmmakers room to move beyond a conventional Road Runner chase.

More importantly, the movie arrives with a story surrounding its release that is almost as unusual as the film itself. After spending years in uncertainty, the fact that audiences will finally be able to watch it in theaters gives the premiere an extra layer of curiosity. That history alone should make opening weekend worth watching, especially among animation fans who have followed the project’s long road to release.

August Is Ending With More Variety Than Expected

The remaining August schedule is not dominated by a single genre or franchise. Families also have PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie arriving August 14, while the broader theatrical calendar continues to mix studio releases with smaller genre films and limited engagements. Cinema United’s current release calendar confirms a particularly busy stretch across August 14, August 21 and August 28.

That variety may ultimately be the most interesting part of the month. One weekend offers mysterious science fiction, the next puts supernatural horror directly against a Statham action movie, and the final major Friday gives a once-shelved Looney Tunes project its chance in theaters.

Summer movie seasons are usually remembered for the films that dominate June and July, but August often creates room for stranger projects to find an audience. With The End of Oak Street, Insidious: Out of the Further, Mutiny and Coyote vs. Acme all arriving within a two-week span, 2026 is giving moviegoers several good reasons to keep watching after the biggest blockbusters have already had their turn.

‘Verity’ Trailer: Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett, & Dakota Johnson Lead Colleen Hoover’s Psychological Thriller

The more we see of Verity, the more twisted it looks. I’ve had it said on good authority that this is the wildest, most intense of Colleen Hoover’s novels, which may explain why this adaptation has the most buzz since It Ends With Us. Amazon MGM Studios certainly knows what it has on its hands. Hoover films have so far earned over $500M already, and there’s every reason to think this one will be a hit, as well.

Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett, and Dakota Johnson lead Verity, a psychosexual thriller about a struggling writer offered a dream gig, helping to complete the latest novel by writer Verity Crawford as she is unable following a mysterious accident. However, this assignment spirals into lies, obsession, and secrets when she discovers a hidden manuscript with disturbing revelations about Verity that leave her wondering what’s real and what’s fantasy.

The film is directed by Michael Showalter, known for The Big Sick, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and The Idea of You, also with Hathaway.

Verity hits theaters on October 2nd.

‘Paper Tiger’ Teaser: Adam Driver, Miles Teller, And Scarlett Johansson Face The Russian Mafia In James Gray’s Latest

Is blood truly thicker than water? It’s a question that James Gray has pondered before, and he returns to it in the 1980s New York drama Paper Tiger, starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, and Miles Teller. Following the film’s world premiere at Cannes, and the rousing 10-minute standing ovation it received, NEON has dropped a brief teaser for one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

Driver and Teller play brothers who, after coming up with a get-rich scheme that works too well, come under threat by the Russian mafia. As the pressure mounts, family bonds are tested with dire consequences.

The film is directed by Gray based on his own screenplay. It’s his first film since Armageddon Time in 2022, and returns to the familiar territory, exploring the dark side of the American Dream, as seen in We Own the Night and The Yards.

NEON will release Paper Tiger in theaters on November 13th. Check out the teaser trailer below.

‘Teenage Sex And Death At Camp Miasma’ Interview: Hannah Einbinder Talks Sexual Awakening And “Little Death”

Jane Schoenbrun’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma could form a kind of loose trilogy with their previous films, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and I Saw the TV Glow. Each explores sexual identity, sexual awakening, and the impact of the media we consume on a regular basis. If I’m honest, Schoenbrun’s latest appeals to me on a more personal level because, like many others, the slasher flicks that they riff on were integral to my love of cinema, too.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma stars Hacks breakout Hannah Einbinder as an indie filmmaker tasked with remaking a classic slasher horror franchise for a new “woke” generation. Gillian Anderson plays the original movie’s star, a recluse who now lives at the camp where it was filmed. While developing the film, the two become more than just colleagues; the romantic sparks fly, along with the realization that they are doing something that breaks the confines of the horror genre.

I had the chance to speak with Hannah Einbinder about Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. This was a real treat for me, as Einbinder’s performance was extraordinary, especially as her character grows closer to the “little death” she is seeking throughout. We talked about Schoenbrun’s personal connection to the material, and how Einbinder found something similar for herself. She discussed the passion that they had for the story, working with a legend like Gillian Anderson, and so much more.

Check out my interview with Einbinder below, and my review of the film here!

‘X-Men’: Adam Driver’s Potential Villain Role May Have Been Revealed

Rumors continue to swirl that Adam Driver has landed a villain role in Marvel’s X-Men reboot, although at this point that is unconfirmed. However, speculation continues as to who Driver could be playing. Some have said it’s Magneto, although I hope they keep the Master of Magnetism at bay for a few movies. Others have suggested Mister Sinister, another character I don’t want to see for quite some time. This latest report, put forth by THR’s Heatvision blog, is that Driver might be up to play Hellfire Club leader, Sebastian Shaw.

This would be a more suitable villain for the first MCU X-Men movie, and makes sense given the casting we’ve already seen. Sebastian Shaw is a powerful mutant with the ability to absorb and rechannel kinetic energy into immense strength. He’s also rich and politically powerful, which is why he leads the cabal, The Hellfire Club, as its Black King. And who serves as his White Queen? Emma Frost, who we know will be played by Samara Weaving.

Another member of the Hellfire Club, albeit briefly? Jean Grey, while overwhelmed by the dark energy of the Phoenix Force and Emma Frost’s manipulations. She, of course, is being played by Sadie Sink, although there’s no official confirmation that she’s in the movie.

Kevin Bacon played Sebastian Shaw in 2011’s X-Men: First Class. While not totally comic book accurate, Bacon had the pompous, elitist attitude down pat.

The cool thing about Shaw is that he’s a longtime foe of the X-Men, but he’s worked with them on occasion, as well. Because his reach and interests are global, sometimes Shaw has needed the help of the X-Men, and they have needed him. In short, he could be a character that sticks around for the long haul. If you’re Marvel and you’ve been pursuing Driver for years, this is the kind of role you want him for.

Box Office: ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Hits $1.6B Worldwide, ‘One Night Only’ Flops With $5.7M

  1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day- $145M/$655M

After the biggest opening weekend of all-time, Spider-Man: Brand New Day just kept on swinging with a second week that is the third-best ever, and is stronger than the debuts of Tom Holland’s first two Spidey movies. With $145M, the film fell 60% from last week but kept an astonishing per site average of $32K. After two weeks, the $655M is actually ahead of Avengers: Endgame‘s $621M at this stage, and already ranks as the fifth best domestic earner for the MCU, with Avengers: Infinity War‘s $678M likely to be passed by tomorrow. Overseas, it has already crossed the $1B mark, for a worldwide total of $1.65B.

2. The Odyssey– $31.5M/$461.1M

After four weeks, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has crossed $1B globally, and with $1.1B has become the greatest earner of his storied career.

3. One Night Only (review)- $5.7M

Universal took a big swing with One Night Only, the high-concept rom-com that is basically The Purge for sex comedies. Led by charming leads Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner, the film failed to connect with audiences and critics alike, earning just $5.7M.

4. Super Troopers 3– $4M

Searchlight Pictures dusted off the Broken Lizard comedy troupe for Super Troopers 3, and it seems nobody really cared. The cop comedy earned just $4M at 2,760 theaters, which is considerably less than the $15M by Super Troopers 2 in 2018. Critics didn’t really dig this return, holding it at just 49% fresh on RT, while audiences didn’t dig it either at 71%. I got some emails asking where my review of it was, and the truth is that I have never liked Super Troopers so I skipped this one. The simple joys of running my own shop. That said, I’m not totally against the BL crew. Club Dread is pretty damn funny.

5. Toy Story 5– $3.9M/$470.3M

6. Minions & Monsters– $3.5M/$176.3M

7. Moana– $2.8M/$121.4M

8. Ice Cream Man (review)- $2M

Eli Roth returned to the world of gory NC-17 horror with Ice Cream Man, about a sadistic purveyor of sweet treats who turns kids into murderous zombies. The self-distributed film opened in 1,678 sites and earned $2M domestic with an additional $1.6M overseas.

9. The Invite– $717K/$24.2M

10. CatVideoFest2026– $568K

Also…A24 released its anticipated Anthony Bourdain biopic, Tony, starring Dominic Sessa, in six theaters for $348K. It’s a strong start for a film about a beloved cultural figure, and it will be interesting to see how it does in expansion. My review for that is this week.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle-produced documentary Cookie Queens (review) opened in 446 sites by Roadside Attractions, earning just $327K. I think the draw for this one is over the long haul and on digital. It’s a good film that will make you look at Cookie Season in a different way.

MUBI released the critically acclaimed Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (review), the follow-up to director Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow. The horror riff led by Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson earned $251K from 5 locations.

‘Run Hide Fight: Infidels’ Trailer: Jonathan Majors Stars In ‘Red Dawn’ For MAGA Dummies Flick This September

Jonathan Majors has decided that for his big acting comeback, he’s not going to even try to get back into Hollywood’s good graces with challenging roles and compelling performances. Instead, he’ll go the Dean Cain and Kevin Sorbo route by descending into the sad corner of MAGA movie-making with Run Hide Fight: Infidels. After the hilariously awful teaser from a few months ago, the full trailer is here and it puts Majors front and center. Not sure who he thinks that will win over, especially as The Daily Wire seems to be running on fumes (and bogus followers). Hate and paranoia can only keep you afloat so long.

If you thought Armie Hammer’s comeback in an anti-immigrant revenge flick from Uwe Boll, Majors is like “Hold my beer, bro.”

In what can only be described as a MAGA fever dream, Run Hide Fight: Infidels finds a liberal college attacked by radical Islamist terrorists due to its pro-Palestinian stance. The terrorists plan to enforce Sharia Law on the student body, but the campus is defended by “a ragtag band of red-blooded students, a security guard tired of ‘Uncle Tom’ smears, and a Delta Force vet.”

It’s like Red Dawn, only dumber.

The liberals, you’ll be shocked to learn, are described as “clueless” in the official synopsis sent to press.  Frankly, I’m surprised they sent this shit to me. Don’t they read my social media?

You might recall the controversial 2020 film, Run Hide Fight, which tried to make school shootings into a Die Hard movie. It was pretty sad. Run Hide Fight: Infidels is a standalone sequel, directed by the same filmmaker, Kyle Rankin. Clearly, the point is to further divide Americans over the Israel-Gaza issue, while also hating on college students and activists who are too educated to fall for their propaganda.

David Lucas, JC Kilcoyne, Tyler Aser, James Bingham, Savanna Leigh James, Jason Gray-Stanford, Chris K. Lee, Sharon Johal, Travis Mills, Siaka Massaquoi, and Justin S. Myrick are also in the cast. No, I haven’t heard of them, either.

I find it hard to believe that even Majors’ most staunch defenders will okay this shit. Run Hide Fight: Infidels hits The Daily Wire on September 16th.

Kit Connor To Play Scott “Cyclops” Summers In Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Movie

I’m seeing a method to Marvel’s madness when casting its upcoming X-Men movie directed by Jake Schreier. The only official casting we’ve got so far include Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and presumably Sadie Sink as Jean Grey. Now another character deeply connected to them both has been set, as Deadline reports Kit Connor has landed the role of Scott “Cyclops” Summers.

According to the report, Connor was one of many who tested in front of Schreier and Marvel chief Kevin Feige. Others interviewed during the July 4th holiday so we might see some more casting news in the coming days.

Connor’s biggest stateside roles have been in voicing The Wild Robot, Alex Garland’s Warfare, and the hit Netflix series Heartstopper, for which he’ll return for the movie sequel Heartstopper Forever. He has also landed a role in Garland’s Elden Ring movie for A24, and that’s going to be huge.

Cyclops is maybe the most important figure in the history of the X-Men. Professor Xavier’s first and favorite “son”, Scott Summers has led the team through most of its incarnations. He’s known for his concussive force blasts from his eyes (they aren’t heat rays, folks! comic book writers get it wrong all the time), and for the red ruby quartz glasses he must wear to contain the powerful mutant ability. He has also been romantically connected to both Emma Frost and Jean Grey, making him the luckiest Boy Scout in history.  Cyclops is also the father of Nathan “Cable” Summers and the brother to Alex “Havok” Summers, so the Summers bloodline runs deep.

Cyclops has been played memorably by James Marsden, who will also return for Avengers: Doomsday, and also by Tye Sheridan…less memorably.

It’s my guess that we’ve learned about these three roles first for a reason, and now I expect we’ll start seeing some of the other important X-Men roles cast.

‘The Only Living Pickpocket In New York’ Trailer: John Turturro Is An Aging Thief In A Digital World

While we’ve come to accept that the arrival of the digital age has changed everything for the blue-collar workforce, the same can be said for criminals. What does a pickpocket do when people are no longer walking around with leather wallets full of cash, but instead money is kept “safely” in digital wallets? John Turturro plays a thief facing that dilemma in The Only Living Pickpocket in New York, which earned critical acclaim at Sundance earlier this year.

Written and directed by Noah Segan, the film stars Turturro and a cast of fellow screen veterans including Giancarlo Esposito, Will Price, Tatiana Maslany, Victoria Moroles, Steve Buscemi, and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Rian Johnson serves as an exec-producer, as well.

SYNOPSIS: Harry Lehman (John Turturro) is an aging pickpocket who plies his trade with ever-diminishing returns in a drastically changed New York. Wallets stuffed with cash have been replaced by easily canceled credit cards, and Harry struggles to make ends meet as he cares for his disabled wife, Rosie. When he unwittingly purloins and fences a valuable USB stick, Harry finds himself in a race against time to return the loot or face the rage of a vengeful crime family.”

Sony Pictures Classics releases The Only Living Pickpocket in New York on October 16th in LA and NY, before expanding a week later.

‘Primetime’ Trailer: Robert Pattinson Is Out To Catch Predators As Controversial TV Host Chris Hansen

The volatile mix of journalism, reality entertainment, and law enforcement took off with shows such as Cops and America’s Most Wanted in the 1980s and 1990s. But it exploded with the arrival of To Catch a Predator in 2004, and recently, as seen in the documentary Predators (review here), there’s renewed interest in exploring how blurring these lines led to catastrophic results for society as a whole. Documentary filmmaker Lance Oppenheim makes his feature debut with Primetime, starring Robert Pattinson as controversial host Chris Hansen, who became the face of how this kind of exploitation could go terribly wrong.

A24 has dropped the first full trailer for Primetime ahead of its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, with Pattinson starring as Hansen, an investigative journalist who made television history by exposing the underbelly of sexual predators for all of the world to see.

Without giving too much away about Hansen’s trajectory, he’s a guy who was constantly torn between the pursuit of ratings and doing what’s right legally, and that led to consequences I don’t think he was prepared for.

Pattinson’s joined in the cast by Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, Anna Faris, and Phoebe Bridgers.

SYNOPSIS: In 2006, To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen sets out to make television history.

A24 has set Primetime to hit theaters on September 25th.
