‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ Trailer: A Final Look At Barry Jenkins’ Gorgeous ‘Moonlight’ Followup

Whether introduced to the work of Barry Jenkins through his Best Picture winner, Moonlight, or his previous film Medicine for Melancholy, two things should be clear. He will explore the subject of love from an unexpected perspective, and he’ll do so in a beautiful, poetic way. And you’ll find the same holds true for his latest film, If Beale Street Could Talk, which has many already predicting another Oscar nomination for the director.

A “final” trailer has been dropped for the adaptation of James Baldwin’s novel, and it’s lyrical in its simple beauty. Featuring an ensemble cast to die for including Kiki Layne, Stephan James, Regina King, Colman Domingo, Tayonah Parris, Dave Franco, Brian Tyree Henry, Ed Skrein, Diego Luna, Pedro Pascal, Finn Wittrock, Emily Rios, and Michael Beach, the story follows young lovers who find their relationship tested by the law in 1970s Harlem.

It’ll be interesting to see whether audiences let this film stand on its own or if Moonlight will always be the bar that Jenkins must reach. I’m hoping it’s the former.

If Beale Street Could Talk opens December 14th. Check out the trailer and the synopsis below:

Set in early-1970s Harlem, If Beale Street Could Talk is a timeless and moving love story of both a couple’s unbreakable bond and the African-American family’s empowering embrace, as told through the eyes of 19-year-old Tish Rivers (screen newcomer KiKi Layne). A daughter and wife-to-be, Tish vividly recalls the passion, respect and trust that have connected her and her artist fiancé Alonzo Hunt, who goes by the nickname Fonny (Stephan James). Friends since childhood, the devoted couple dream of a future together but their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit. Through the unique intimacy and power of cinema, If Beale Street Could Talk honors the author’s prescient words and imagery, charting the emotional currents navigated in an unforgiving and racially biased world as the filmmaker poetically crosses time frames to show how love and humanity endure.

‘Artemis Fowl’ Trailer: Root For The Supervillain In Disney’s Latest Family-Adventure Film

With Disney just dropping a trailer for The Lion King and getting a whopping $200M+ views in near-record time, it’s easy to forget just how many properties they have at their disposal. One that could be a huge juggernaut for them next year, we’re talking of Harry Potter-level proportions, is Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Artemis Fowl, based on the wildly popular novels by Eoin Colfer.

Disney hopes to keep their hot streak alive with the release of the first Artemis Fowl teaser, promising an epic all-ages adventure. The film centers on 12-year-old boy genius Artemis Fowl, who comes from a long line of criminal masterminds.  Artemis is played by Ferdia Shaw, with Lara McDonnell as Captain Holly Short, an elf he has kidnapped to ransom for fairy gold.  The cast also includes Tamara Smart, Nonzo Anozie, Hond Chau, Josh Gad, and Judi Dench.

Artemis Fowl will hit theaters on August 9th 2019.

Funko Aquaman And Mera Battle Ocean Master In An Adorable Animated Short

If Aquaman is half as adorable as Funko’s latest animated short…well, that would be the most serious departure from the Zack Snyder era possible. The latest is titled Aquaman: Final Showdown, and it’s the last of a four-part series featuring Funko Pop versions of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Amber Heard’s Mera.

In this episode they engage in a cutesy climactic battle against Orm and his soldiers. This after Mera is apparently stunned by Aquaman’s classic gold costume. Or maybe she’s admiring Momoa’s Funko pecs or something.
I’ve included each chapter below so you can see this deep, complex story in full.

‘The Lion King’ Will Include A Brand New Character Voiced By Amy Sedaris

Disney’s teaser for Jon Favreau’s The Lion King debuted on Thanksgiving, and generated 224M views, becoming the second most-watched trailer ever behind Avengers: Infinity War. Not bad when you consider most people were home eating turkey or watching football. And if there were 224M views I suspect that roughly half of them were people complaining it was too much of a shot-for-shot remake of the 1994 animated classic. Well, now we know there will be at least one difference.

Variety reports Strangers with Candy and Bojack Horseman‘s Amy Sedaris will voice a brand new character in The Lion King. The comedian will play an elephant shrew, a tiny mammal native to Africa and known for its long nose and speed. Sedaris worked with Favreau previously on his 2014 food truck dramedy, Chef.

Sedaris joins Donald Glover, Beyonce, James Earl Jones, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Alfre Woodard, an more in the voice cast. The Lion King opens July 19th 2019.

Guillermo Del Toro Reveals Huge List Of Unmade Projects Including ‘Pacific Rim 2’, ‘Justice League Dark’, And A ‘Hulk’ TV Series

You might think that a guy who can get a movie as weird as The Shape of Water greenlit can do pretty much anything he wants. Well, that hasn’t always been the case for Guillermo del Toro, who has had more than his share of projects crash and burn without a single scene being shot. Who can forget At the Mountains of Madness, a passion project he threw himself into but never saw the light of day? Del Toro has taken it upon himself to release a full list of the many unmade projects he’s spent a good chunk of his life working on, and damn, we’re really missing out on some good stuff.

Rather than posting all of his tweets, here’s the list of projects he’s listed…

“The Witches”

“Justice League Dark”

“Beauty and the Beast”

“At the Mountains of Madness”

“Fantastic Voyage”

“The Count of Monte Cristo”

“Mephisto’s Bridge”

“Pacific Rim 2”
“Secret Project (Untitled)”

“Superstitious”

“Nightmare Alley”
“Haunted Mansion”

“The Hulk” TV pilot

“The Buried Giant”

“The Coffin”

“Drood”

“List of 7” (co-written with Mark Frost)

“Wind in the Willows”

Damn.

Okay, a little bit about some of these.  The Witches was a script del Toro wrote as a remake of Nicolas Roeg’s 1990 dark horror-comedy. Robert Zemekis was brought on to direct it and chances are slim he’ll use del Toro’s screenplay.

Oh, Justice League Dark. >sigh<  This was the paranormal Justice League film del Toro had been working on that would have featured characters such as John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, and Zatanna. Del Toro left it a few years ago and the project really hasn’t gone anywhere. We got an animated film out of the premise, though, although chances are a live-action one is highly unlikely.

Del Toro’s vision for Beauty and the Beast was set up at Warner Bros. and also would’ve starred Emma Watson. But when it died as so many del Toro projects do, Watson jumped ship to Disney and the rest is box office history.

At the Mountains of Madness, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s horror novel, was a film del Toro wanted to make more than any other. He toiled at it for a long time, and even had Tom Cruise on board to star, but this was at a time when studios were suffering heavy losses on expensive films, and Warner Bros. was fearful of a big budget R-rated horror with no obvious mass audience appeal.

Del Toro’s remake of the 1966 sci-fi adventure Fantastic Voyage is still fairly recent. He was going to take it on following The Shape of Water but as of now he’s on a bit of a hiatus, so it’s possible this one still happens. However, that del Toro saw fit to put it on this list makes me think that may not happen.

Pacific Rim Uprising didn’t have del Toro’s involvement at all, despite his development of a sequel for years. Ultimately, this was another one that came down to costs and creative direction. Del Toro calls his version of the script “very different” and I hope some day we get to see what that would have been.

Before the Hulk became too popular for Marvel to water down, they considered the idea of a TV series with del Toro directing the pilot. Doubtful anything close to this happens now, unless it ends up part of Disney+ and Mark Ruffalo agrees to it.

So what’s the point of all this? Del Toro is basically giving us a window into the amount of time he has spent on things that never happened, so when people complain that he doesn’t make enough movies they can see that he stays busy. We can all keep hoping some or all of these projects eventually see the light of day, and there’s some reason to hope. Del Toro’s current Pinocchio project would have been on this list just a few months ago, but now it’s in development at Netflix.

‘I Am The Night’ Trailer: Patty Jenkins And Chris Pine’s TNT Series Takes On The Black Dahlia Murder

In the opening moments of the trailer for I Am the Night, Patty Jenkins and Chris Pine are seen on the set of Wonder Woman 1984. But don’t let that fool you; this isn’t some kind of DCEU spinoff and you won’t find any superheroes in their anticipated TNT event series, although it does deal with the Black Dahlia, which sounds like it would make a pretty cool name for a supervillain.

I Am the Night is based on the true story of Fauna Hodel (played by India Eisley), a white-skinned, blue-eyed black woman given up by her mother and sets out to discover the truth of her past. Her journey sets her on a sinister trail involving a doctor who is also considered a suspect in the notorious killing of Elizabeth Short aka the Black Dahlia.

Jenkins will produce and direct the first two episodes, with Pine and Eisley joined in the cast by Jefferson Mays, Leland Orser, Connie Nielson, Golden Brooks, and Yul Vazquez.  Here is the synopsis:

From executive producer Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), I Am the Night tells the incredible story of Fauna Hodel (India Eisley) who was given away at birth. As Fauna begins to investigate the secrets to her past, she follows a sinister trail that swirls ever closer to an infamous Hollywood gynecologist, Dr. George Hodel (Jefferson Mays), a man involved in the darkest Hollywood debauchery. Chris Pine plays Jay Singletary, a former Marine-turned-hack-reporter/paparazzo.

I Am the Night runs for six episodes and will premiere on TNT beginning January 28th 2019.

The ‘Child’s Play’ Remake Introduces You To The New Chucky aka “Buddi”

Today is Cyber Monday, and what better time to reintroduce the world to a new high-tech version of everybody’s favorite killer doll, Chucky! Or…er, Buddi?

The upcoming Child’s Play remake has launched its official website, and while we always knew this version of Chucky would be more high-tech, the amount of features he apparently has make him seem more like a smartphone. Oh, and his name might not even be Chucky when all is said and done.  The website is done up to look like a giant advertisement for the Buddi doll, and here are some of his listed features…

  1. Buddi comes equipped with a highly intricate cloud-backed voice recognition engine capable of identifying speech.
  2. Using sophisticated Kaslan algorithms, Buddi can comprehend inflection, tonality and subtle variations in the human voice.
  3. Buddi learns both from human interaction and via its 20 sensors and cameras which provide detailed realtime information about its environment.
  4. Buddi utilizes state of the art sensor designs which provide high resolution image recognition and grip sensitivity.
  5. Buddi comes preloaded with the ability to fluently comprehend and converse in both English and Spanish with the option to expand via the Kaslan Language Acquisition App.
  6. The doll also features “Programming on your tablet, Advanced programming on your computer, and remote control on your smart phone.”
There’s also a weird message from Harry Kaslan, founder of the company that produces the Buddi toy…

A message from Henry Kaslan:

Thank you, friends!

Henry Kaslan
President and Founder, Kaslan Corporation

Okay, so there’s a lot going on here. All I know is that a Chucky..er, Buddi doll that is basically a mini-Terminator lacks any real appeal to me. Maybe you feel differently.  I do know that I’ll pay to see anything with Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry in it, so at some point this will still get my money.
Child’s Play will be directed by Lars Klevberg and open on June 21st 2019.

‘The Vanishing’ Trailer: Gerard Butler Is A Lighthouse Keeper Fighting For Survival

I don’t blame you for thinking, “Oh god, not another awful Gerard Butler action flick”, but The Vanishing does promise to be something different for the actor. Very different. First of all, he doesn’t appear to be trying to save the world or anything like that; there are no guns, nuclear submarines, or car chases. Instead, what we have is what appears to be a tightly-wound psychological thriller about three lighthouse keepers who make a life-changing discovery.

Directed by Kristoffer Nyholm, best known for TV work on Taboo, The Killing, and others, the film pairs Butler up alongside Peter Mullan and newcomer Connor Swindells. They play lighthouse keepers whose lives are changed when a man washes up on their shore carrying a trunk full of gold, and the realization hits them what could be done with that kind of money. It also occurs to them that others are sure to come looking for it.
Again, this is not your typical Butler film. It’s good to see him tapping into his Scottish roots again in taking on a role like this, and I hope we get to see more of it.  The Vanishing hits theaters and VOD on January 4th 2019.

RIP: Bernardo Bertolucci, Director Of ‘The Last Emperor’ And ‘Last Tango In Paris, Dead At 77

Sad news this morning as we’ve learned that Oscar-winning Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci has passed away at the age of 77.

Bertolucci will probably always be remembered for his films that pushed the boundaries of what could be seen on the big screen. His career having started in 1962 with the internationally acclaimed  La Commare Secca, which you can now get on Criterion, Bertolucci would court controversy a few years later with 1972’s Last Tango in Paris. Starring the great Marlon Brando as an American expatriate who enters into a sexually-charged relationship with a Parisian woman, the film became notable for its graphic portrayals of sex and was a hit around the world. Brando earned an Oscar nomination for his performance and Bertolucci a Best Director nomination.

Fifteen years later, Bertolucci would come to dominate the Oscars with The Last Emperor, an autobiography on Puyi, the last Emperor of China. It was the first Western film authorized by the People’s Republic of China to film in the Forbidden City in Beijing. That year it was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won them all, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Never the most prolific filmmaker throughout his career, Bertolucci still managed to court controversy in his later years. Younger audiences may be familiar with his penultimate effort, the NC-17 rated drama The Dreamers, which starred Michael Pitt and Eva Green in her breakout role. The film is still highly praised for its depiction of 1960s Paris and many homages to New Wave cinema. Bertolucci’s final movie was 2012’s Me and You, which screened at Cannes that year.

I was a late bloomer when it came to Bertolucci’s work, only watching The Last Emperor and Last Tango in Paris in the last few years. The Dreamers does remain my personal favorite, although I’ve grown fond of 1970’s The Conformist, a visually dazzling film that was the first of Bertolucci’s many collaborations with multi-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro.

Greg Kinner To Play Bob Hope In Keira Knightley’s Miss World Dramedy ‘Misbehaviour’

Greg Kinnear wouldn’t be my first choice to play comedy legend Bob Hope, but it’s certainly an inspired move. Kinnear will play Hope, with Phantom Thread‘s Lesley Manville as his wife Dolores, in Misbehaviour, the Miss World dramedy set to star Keira Knightley.

The story follows the real-life events surrounding the 1970 Miss World contest, which was disrupted by the newly created Women’s Liberation Movement. They ransacked the live televised broadcast which was being hosted by a dumbfounded Bob Hope.  When the show resumed, the winner wasn’t the Swedish contestant as everyone expected, but instead the winner was Miss Grenada, making her the first black woman ever crowned Miss World.

The film will also star Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jessie Buckley, Rhys Ifans, Keely Hawes, and Phyllis Logan. Philippa Lowthorpe is directing with production currently underway. Kinnear can currently be seen in the final season of Netflix’s House of Cards.
