- The Devil Wears Prada 2- $43M/$144.8M
In its second week, The Devil Wears Prada 2 scored a close win against newcomer Mortal Kombat II, with $43M in 4200 locations. The film has already surpassed the $124M domestic total of the 20-year-old original. Globally, it has tallied $433M overall. Interestingly, it was actually trailing MK2 going into Mother’s Day, which is when it surged ahead. I guess we know what the kids treated momma to for her special day.
2. Mortal Kombat II (review)- $40M
Warner Bros. dropped video game sequel Mortal Kombat II into 3,503 theaters where it earned $40M, just falling short of a flawless victory over The Devil Wears Prada 2. It’s not a bad showing for the bloody, R-rated sequel, arriving five years after its predecessor and with a new lead actor in Karl Urban as Johnny Cage. Roughly half of its earnings came from premium formats/IMAX, which will likely all go away in a couple of weeks when The Mandalorian and Grogu hits. Reviews from critics weren’t great at 65% on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences, who are likely to be fans of the games, gave it 89%. Personally, I loved it. Overseas, the reaction was kinda ‘meh’, with only an additional $23M.
3. Michael– $36.5M/$240.4M
4. The Sheep Detectives (review)- $15.9M
Amazon/MGM Studios released the unusual whodunnit The Sheep Detectives into 3,457 theaters and earned a solid $15.9M. I actually expected slightly more, but this is still pretty good. Led by Hugh Jackman and a star-studded voice cast, the film follows a group of sheep investigating the murder of their beloved shepherd. It’s a family movie that tackles some heady themes, and it was loved by critics and audiences across the board with scores above 90%.
5. Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live in 3D– $7.5M
The unusual pairing of Billie Eilish and James Cameron netted $7.5M for the debut weekend of concert film Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft. The 3D spectacle scored with both critics and audiences, over 90% from both, and could have a decent hold if previous Cameron films are anything to go by.
6. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie– $6.6M/$412.1M
7. Project Hail Mary– $6M/$327.7M
8. Hokum– $3.3M/$12.4M
9. Deep Water– $780K/$3.6M
10. Animal Farm– $663K/$5M
