This is one of those shaky-as-Hell rumors that is too much fun to ignore. It probably won’t pan out, but then, crazier things have happened. A report from DeuxMoi alleges that Tom Cruise wants Hamnet director Chloe Zhao to helm the next Mission: Impossible movie. Say wha???
The report claims that Cruise sought out Zhao to direct Mission: Impossible 9, which is being written right now. This would be a huge departure for the franchise, which had Cruise’s pal Christopher McQuarrie directing the last four films.
Somewhat surprising is whether there are plans for more Mission: Impossible at all. The Final Reckoning, teased as the last movie in the long-running action franchise, earned around $600M globally. The real problem was the massive $400M budget, leading to huge losses for Paramount.
Personally, I dig the idea of Zhao doing an action movie of M:I scale. She did a much better job with Marvel’s Eternals than she has been given credit for. And I’m willing to bet she’d be open to guiding Ethan Hunt’s next mission if offered the chance.
Again, this rumor is very dicey so don’t take it as gospel. It would be kinda cool, though, right? Let’s see what happens.
