Meryl Streep Confirmed To Play Iconic Folk Singer Joni Mitchell In Cameron Crowe’s Film

Remember Cameron Crowe? He hasn’t actually directed a feature since Aloha, and that massive dud was a decade ago. Can’t blame him for wanting to take a break after that one. He did have the Showtime series Roadies, but that didn’t last very long. Well, Crowe appears to finally be ready for a comeback with his long-gestating Joni Mitchell biopic, and today we’re learning who will play an older version of the iconic folk singer.

Record producer Clive Davis confirmed (via Rolling Stone) at Saturday’s Los Angeles pre-Grammys party that Meryl Streep will play Joni Mitchell in Crowe’s film. Davis spotted Mitchell at the show, and that’s when he made the announcement.

This project has been in limbo for so long that one could be forgiven for believing it would never happen. It’s been very slow going, with more rumors than hard concrete news. Fortunately, this comes straight from a source who would know what’s going on. When reached for comment, Crowe basically backed up Davis’ statement. Crowe famously interviewed Mitchell in 1979 and they have remained close ever since, even working on this project together.

As for who will play the younger Mitchell? Jeff Sneider’s been saying that Anya Taylor-Joy could be up for it. Interesting choice.
