Scott Derrickson isn’t the director you would typically associate with a movie described as a “high-action, genre-bending love story.” But that was what we first learned about his new film, The Gorge, and was somewhat confirmed by the initial photo featuring stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller, clad in black spy gear looking like they’re about to share an intimate moment. Basically, this is not going to be another straight horror movie from the guy behind Sinister, The Black Phone, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Doctor Strange.
Then again, why are we surprised? Derrickson is also the filmmaker behind 2008’s sci-fi remake The Day the Earth Stood Still, so he’s more well-rounded than given credit for.
As seen in the new trailer, The Gorge is a little bit of a mystery, a bit sci-fi, a bit horror, and yeah, also a romance. Taylor-Joy and Teller star as elite snipers stationed in watch towers and tasked with protecting the world from a mysterious threat located within a highly-classified gorge.
The film also stars Sigourney Weaver, Sope Dirisu, and William Houston. Derrickson directed from a script by The Tomorrow War writer Zach Dean.
The Gorge hits Apple TV+ on February 14th 2025.
