Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rian Johnson have been joined at the hip ever since Brick in 2005, with the actor either starring or having a voice role in every one of the director’s movies. The partnership continues with Gordon-Levitt’s sophomore directorial effort, an untitled AI thriller that will be yet another reunion.
Deadline reports Gordon-Levitt will direct Anne Hathaway in the untitled AI film. The two reunite after starring in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises together.
Details on this new film remain a mystery. Gordon-Levitt will direct based on a script he co-wrote with Kieran Fitzgerald, writer on Oliver Stone’s Snowden which he starred in. Johnson and Ram Bergman are aboard as producers through their T-Street label, and the film has a story credit for Natasha Lyonne. Lyonne starred in the Peacock series Poker Face which was produced by, guess who, Rian Johnson, and had a guest role for Gordon-Levitt. So the connections are EVERYWHERE for this one.
The new film marks Gordon-Levitt’s first as a director since his debut, 2013’s Don Jon, which Johnson helped out with. Remember all of the buzz for that one? It was a pretty decent box office success and an indie darling. He did recently direct episodes of his Apple TV series Mr. Corman.
This continues a busy stretch for Hathaway, who recently signed on to Christopher Nolan’s summer 2026 blockbuster. She also has a reunion with James Gray for crime film Paper Tiger, and the next Colleen Hover adaptation, Verity.
