Earlier this year, we learned of plans to reboot the Scary Movie franchise of comedies. It’s been more than a decade since Scary Movie 5, and now we know this revival will be led by the family that created it in the first place. According to Deadline, the Wayans Brothers are coming back for more horror spoof fun.
Keenan Ivory Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Marlon Wayans created the first Scary Movie in 2000, and now they’ll return to write the next one. Whether it’s a true sequel or a full-on reboot is unclear. Keenan directed the first two movies with Shawn and Marlon co-writing and starring in them. Don’t be surprised if Shawn and Marlon find their way back in front of the camera for this one, too. It’ll be interesting to see if they can lure back some other regulars, such as Anna Faris and Regina Hall.

“I would love to work with Regina again. I just love her so much,” says Faris. “We would make each other giggle all day long. Regina Hall would be my answer. And money. But mostly all Regina!”
The Wayans’ ceased any involvement beginning with the third movie. While the first two films largely spoofed the Scream franchise, further sequels expanded to include The Ring, Signs, 8 Mile, and other films outside of the horror genre.
Scary Movie has earned nearly $1B combined at the box office, with all of the films finding some degree of success. They also helped spawn a loose-knit bunch of “Movie” parodies such as Superhero Movie, Date Movie, and Epic Movie. All terrible.
The Wayans Brothers said in a statement, “We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again. We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.”
The plan is for the new Scary Movie to arrive in 2025.
