For the last couple of weeks, rumors have been flying about who would star in James Gunn’s upcoming Max series, Lanterns. Names including Josh Brolin, Ewan McGregor, and Matthew McConaughey were mentioned for the role of Hal Jordan, the most well-known Green Lantern of all. But now Deadline reports it won’t be any of those actors, and instead it will be Friday Night Lights actor Kyle Chandler donning the power ring.
The report says Chandler is in talks to play Hal Jordan in Lanterns. The series comes from Ozark’s Chris Mundy, Watchmen‘s Damon Lindelof and comic book writer Tom King, centering on veteran Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart, members of the intergalactic Green Lantern Corps as they investigate a murder in America’s heartland.
Stewart has been the GL seen most in animated form, but he’s long overdue for some live-action love. The role of arrogant GL Guy Gardner has already been filled by Nathan Fillion, who is set to appear in Gunn’s Superman film next year. The role of Jordan was played by Ryan Reynolds in the terrible 2011 movie.
Chandler won an Emmy for his performance as coach Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights. Recently he’s starred opposite Jason Momoa in Slumberland, and had roles in MonsterVerse films Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong.
